Batik : Avant-Garde

Malaysia’s Batik. The origin of batik production in Malaysia it is known trade relations between the Melayu Kingdom in Jambi and Javanese coastal cities have thrived since the 13th century, the northern coastal batik producing areas of Java (Cirebon, Lasem, Tuban, and Madura) has influenced Jambi batik. This Jambi (Sumatran) batik, as well as Javanese batik, has influenced the batik craft in the Malay peninsula.

The method of Malaysian batik making is different from those of Indonesian Javanese batik, the pattern being larger and simpler with only occasional use of the canting to create intricate patterns. It relies heavily on brush painting to apply colours to fabrics. The colours also tend to be lighter and more vibrant than deep coloured Javanese batik. The most popular motifs are leaves and flowers.

PAM-GAHARA Batik Millenia Student Competition 2020 which is held by Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) and cooperation with Gahara. Gahara is a company that makes batik product. Architect Nik Faiz Nik Amin, a third-generation batik artisan from a family makers based in Penambang, Kelantan. With the opportunity that given, our club sent 20 teams to participate in this competition. The theme that given is “Aspirana Millennia”.

After doing some research, we got the idea from one of the famous shawl and scarf in Malaysia which is ‘Duck’. Vivy Yusof the founder of ‘Duck’ take the opportunity to make modern design batik and applied it to her scarf. The duck scarf brand that is Awanscarf is taken as the inspiration for the batik. This is because the pattern of the scarf has buildings that can be related to the architecture student because as an architecture student, we learn all about the building that is the structure, the material, type of method and much more. Thus, the pattern on the scarf shows the architecture of the buildings in our country such as the Petronas Twin Tower and much more. The uniqueness of Duck's scarf with its abstract pattern and application of modern elements has succeeded in attracting its target customers consisting of young executives. For the design of the batik, the Petronas Twin Tower is taken as an inspiration because the building is one tall building and famous building in the world. The building is well-known in Malaysia. So, for the batik design the base of the Petronas Twin Tower is taken. It is a geometrical shape. Base of the Petronas Twin Tower as the pattern of the batik. In the middle of the pattern, there are 8 stacks of circle to show the Petronas Twin Tower have 88 floors. Avant-Garde is the concept for this batik design. Avant-Garde is synonym for advanced and it is related to our inspiration which is Petronas Twin Tower.
