“Architecture is about life.” quoted Professor Jimmy Lim.
Malaysia as a currently developing nation, the metropolitan scene of Malaysia faces similar patterns the same number of different urban communities around the world: modernization at a quick and unchecked movement. This is because of the interest for new framework and structures, numerous vernacular structure types are quickly vanishing from the metropolitan texture, among them the Malaysian Shophouse. The shophouses was a typical structure style for longer than a century from 1840-1960s and is maybe a typology of a past time. However, it offers numerous exercises and lessons on making a city that epitomizes the personality of the way of life, the absolute opposite of the mysterious present day city. At its most essential program the shophouse is a multi-reason building which is progressively perceived as a more possible and manageable model than assigning squares of structures drafted for a solitary program. This investigation proposes the shophouse as a worthwhile model for future advancement in Malaysia by making reasonable, human scale, socially supportable urban communities. Looking at how the shophouse grew truly, what variables lead towards its decrease, and the current pervasive system towards shophouses is priceless in graphing the eventual fate of the Malaysian Shophouse.
Additionally, the concept of shophouse five foot walkways arch and the stairs generates my idea for the Batik artwork. Relating back to the competition which is themed "Aspirana Millennia'', it is to permit a wide size of what energizes the more youthful age. Thus, me being a part of the younger generation, the thing that excites me is the rich culture, lifestyle and heritage architecture found all around Malaysia. So, I collected the special features and characteristics of a Malaysia shophouses for instance, five-foot walkway (or known as kaki lima), narrow stairs, facade which is off white and ochre in colour and arches. In short, the batik artwork creates a vision of the Malaysia five foot shophouses in a geometrical approaches.
Besides that, the themed colour selected for the batik pattern is to define the rustic yet valuable vision and existence of the Malaysia shophouses. Straightforward in plan, minimalist in design, the greater part of the shophouse structures utilized delicate consumed earth blocks as the primary development material. Thus, giving the shop houses life and a vintage look. Nevertheless, 5 main color were chosen namely, rustic orange (#CD985F), brick red (#BF7151), earthy off-white (#E2DAC3), brownish green (#6F8364) and dark green (#4F6447). Moreover, the shapes used are mainly geometry shape where it can easily create an interesting repeating patterns and allows rhythmic vision. Inspired by the intricate technique and shapes of architecture, I had infuse the beauty of Malaysia vernacular architecture into the artwork. Last but not least, the purpose of this design is delivering the idea of shophouses and vernacular architecture in Malaysia which in my opinion of view shall aspire and inspire the younger generations when developing into batik design for a copper block suited for millennials.
