What is Batik? Batik is both an art and a craft, it is a technique for decorating textiles, by which parts of the textile that’re not to be coloured are covered in molten wax. The word batik originated from Indonesian, and is related to a Malay word, “titik” and the Javanese word, “amba”, meaning “to write”.
Block printing is started with the measured-out cloth on a padded table. The “printer” has the wax pot at his side. The block is dipped into the pot and then pressed against the cloth. The process repeats until the entire cloth is covered.
Coronavirus disease 2019 or Covid-19, a novel pneumonia disease from Wuhan, it was confirmed by the World Health Organization on January 12 in 2020 before becoming an outbreak in throughout the world.
Few of Covid-19 effects such as poverty, panic-buying or family distancing. Poverty is due to the downturn of Malaysia’s economy status or finances especially companies that’re affected. Panic-buying happens in Malaysia upon the start of the pandemic especially the first lockdown when the Prime Minister Tun Muhyiddin Yassin announced it. Next, is forced family-distancing that happened during the lockdown.
The Government of Malaysia enforced a Movement Control Order or MCO from March 18 in 2020 to break the chain of pandemic cases. Thus, it creates and builds the maturity of one’s country to counter a serious threat, which in this case is the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a result, a professional development to be ready for any danger. Other than that, the current situation would ‘forced’ every person to help and support each other in any way they can.
Covid-19 became my main inspiration, the impacts and silver-linings of it is my elaboration. I have chosen the word FRACTAL as its name. FRACTAL in general is a curve or a geometrical figure. It is also to describe a partly random or chaotic phenomena such as the crystal growth and galaxy formation.
As for the creation of the block pattern, I research about fractal patterns. Fractal patterns usually involves points, triangles, I chose a circular-fractal pattern in order to make a relation to the Covid-19’s circular shapes and its ‘neverending spread of plague upon close contact’ trait.
As for the architectural elements, I’ve combined it with one of the golden ratios that is golden proportions. As a result, I was able to include more architectural principles and elements, such as;-
Asymmetry: having two sides that are not the same, not symmetrical.
Hierarchy: The importance of a form or space by its size, shape or placement to other forms or spaces of the organization.
Axis: An imaginary line that is used to organize a group of elements in a design.
Transformation: Concept, structure or organization that can be altered through discrete manipulations and permutations in response to context without a loss of its identity.
