The competition purpose is to create design batik for a copper block suited for millennials. Organize by Gahara and PAM Education Committee to educate architecture student about the culture and local arts. This gives the opportunity for students to express themselves in traditional arts and generate their creativity.

Batik is a very traditional art that were produced by local especially in southeast asia. Batik is a textile art created by drawing or blocked out wax on the fabric then dye in desired colour. The technique is originated from Indonesia and spread through out the country. Most designs come from variation of flowers and motifs. The variation creates the beauty of batik.

The theme given is ‘Aspirana Millennia’. In our own understanding is to create a design that gives the meaning of millennial also known as period of thousand years. The old culture shows the millennial value in our design. The culture that has been inherited by every generation to preserve their tradition.

The inspiration that I got for the batik is about my hometown which is from Sarawak. There is a named behind this batik from Sarawak is called “Pua Kumbu”. Pua Kumbu is a traditional patterned multi-coloured ceremonial cotton cloth used by the Iban people in Sarawak, Malaysia. The "pua kumbu" is a popular native handicraft of the Ibans, one of the indigenous groups of Sarawak, Malaysia. In the olden days, the "pua kumbu" was very much an integral part of the day-to-day affairs and special rituals of the Iban society.

The scores of designs and patterns incorporated on each "pua kumbu" are reflection of the belief and values of the Iban people. These design are said to have a beneficent and protective influence and prevent harm coming to crops and individuals.These design can be made only by the wives and daughters of chiefs,who have attained a certain degree of expertise in weaving a "pua kumbu". The Ibans also draw inspirations for their "pua kumbu" designs and patterns from animals, paints and objects which play an important part in their daily lives.

Representations of natural phenomena also appear in "Pua Kumbu" design which is frequently made use of on a "pua kumbu" is a zigzag pattern which is described as crossing a river.It indicates the zigzag course frequently made by canoes when travelling along a river in order to avoid the strong current.

We use the concept of ‘Vigorous Spirit’ which describes the energetic energy that comes from the “pua kumbu”. “Pua kumbu” also describes as a communication medium between this world and the world of gods. It is the beliefs of Iban races in Sarawak. It is used to create a positive energy and preserve the traditional culture.

The element of architecture that fused into this design is the colour from the batik itself. The colour that been chosen is yellow, black, red. Because it represents the colour of Sarawak flag. Next, through the pattern from the batik, it has a contrast from the colour. It also has a harmony from the pattern, repetation from the diamond pattern and movement from the side pattern which is a wood carving motifs.
