Notable recognition: 2024 NSF CAREER Award, 2023 NIH COBRE RPL Award
The Biomedical and Bioinspired Fluid Dynamics Lab (Basu Lab), directed by Dr. Saikat Basu, is housed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota State University (SDSU). With a scholarly background in classical fluid mechanics, we develop multi-scale theoretical and computational fluid dynamics models of transport inside complex biophysical systems, e.g., in:
respiratory physiology
cancer microenvironment
To validate the models, we collaborate with peers specializing in experiments. The collaborations are often supplemented by our simple table-top tests in 3D-printed anatomical replicas.
For translational merits, we also collaborate extensively with cross-disciplinary groups from medical science, nursing, biology, pharmacology, virology, and the relevant industrial sectors (e.g., in drug delivery, personalized medicine, and device design).
Basu's academic positions
2019 – now Assistant Professor, SDSU
2017 – 18 Instructor, UNC Chapel Hill

Open Positions: We are always on the lookout for motivated undergraduate and graduate students, and occasionally, postdocs. If the group's research aligns with your general interests, email Prof. Basu (at Saikat.Basu@sdstate.edu) with your CV and a brief outline of your prior research experience, if any.
