The Planetarium opened in 1984. It was originally called the Brazosport Nature Center & Planetarium, focusing on the nature of our special planet as well as the rest of the Universe. These animals are all found within the ecosystems of southern Brazoria County and are preserved to allow guests to learn about these creatures. Maybe you have seen a river otter down by the Brazos River, or a raccoon climbing the trees around your house.Â
Earth is the only place in the universe where we have discovered life. Earth is at just the right distance from the Sun for water to be a liquid over much of the planet. Our tilt gives us seasons, making the climate over the planet temperate and comfortable for life to thrive. Our atmosphere and magnetic field surrounding Earth provide a protective shield from dangerous radiation from space. The complex and diverse life we see across the planet is able to grow and thrive because of all of these factors.
We look to space in the hopes of discovering another world where we find life, but celebrate our own very extraordinary planet. Our home, Earth.
