Each term we have different topics aiming to cover important subjects in a child’s life for example celebrations, seasons, road safety, healthy living. The children experience a wide variety of different art and craft activities during their time with us. We have a letter, number, shape and colour of the week. We have a 6 weekly rotation of many of our toys which ensures variety for the children.
The children thoroughly enjoy our French sessions where they sing some French songs and learn some basic words such as hello, please and thank you. They enjoy singing and moving to ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’ in French and join in movement activities by following directions given in French.
We encourage the children to try other languages as we often have children from other countries, for example we have recently had children from Germany and Chile so the children learnt some German and Spanish.
We follow the Early Years Foundations Stage (EYFS)
The EYFS covers children’s development from birth to the end of their first (reception) year in school.
It is based on four principles.
A Unique Child - Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
Positive Relationships - Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
Enabling Environments - Children learn and develop well in enabling environments.
Learning and Development -Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.
The EYFS - three Characteristics of effective learning
Playing and exploring– children investigate and experience things and ‘have a go’.
Active Learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy their achievements.
Creative and critical thinking – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and develop strategies for doing things.
By observing how the children learn we are able to see what we can do or provide in order to support each child to remain an effective and motivated learner.
