At DREAD OR DEAD, we’ve spent decades in the water, watching surfers come and go, trends rise and fall—but longboard surfing in Barbados has never lost its soul. Since 1995, we’ve lived and breathed the island’s surf culture, and longboarding remains one of the purest ways to experience Barbados’ waves. Smooth lines, flowing turns, and a deep connection with the ocean define what Longboard Surfing Barbados truly means to us.
Barbados is not just another surf destination. It’s a place where warm water, consistent swell, and reef-and-beach breaks combine to create ideal longboarding conditions year-round. Whether you’re stepping on a longboard for the first time or refining classic footwork, this island delivers waves that reward style, balance, and patience.
One of the reasons Longboard Surfing Barbados stands out globally is the variety of wave conditions packed into a small island. Gentle rolling waves on the south and west coasts provide long, forgiving faces—perfect for learning trims, cross-steps, and nose rides. On the right day, Barbados offers clean, glassy waves that feel like they were shaped specifically for longboards.
Unlike crowded surf destinations, Barbados still allows surfers to connect with the ocean without chaos. Timing, local knowledge, and respect matter here, and that’s where experience becomes everything.
DREAD OR DEAD Surf Shop and Surf School started small—very small. What began as board repairs, buying and selling boards, and the occasional surf lesson slowly grew into a fully equipped surf shop that can rival stores anywhere in the world. Today, we carry surfboards, longboards, wax, fins, leashes, apparel, reef boots, repair kits, and tech equipment—if it’s surf-related, we have it.
At the heart of it all is Russell Garrett, a surfer for life. This isn’t a business built by outsiders—it’s a family-run operation shaped by obsession, experience, and respect for surfing. After more than 25 years, the shop has evolved, but the people, values, and honest approach remain unchanged.
When people choose Longboard Surfing Barbados, they’re often looking for more than just standing up on a wave. They want confidence, flow, and understanding. Our surf school became a major part of DREAD OR DEAD because we believe learning matters.
We design our longboard surf lessons for:
Complete beginners
Intermediate surfers
Advanced surfers refining their technique
Each lesson starts with beach theory—covering pop-ups, surf etiquette, positioning, and safety—before moving into the water. We adjust every session based on ability, conditions, and personal goals.
Group lessons never exceed four students per instructor, ensuring safety and personal attention. Private one-on-one lessons are also available for those who want focused progression.
What truly separates Longboard Surfing Barbados from DREAD OR DEAD is our local authority. We don’t guess where to surf—we know. Our instructors take you to locations where the wave conditions match your skill level, not where it’s convenient.
Our team—Russell, Matthew, Axe, and Tai—has been with DREAD OR DEAD from the beginning. We are local surfers, proudly representing Barbados at ISA events, WSL competitions, and local contests, with decades of wins and trophies across longboard and performance surfing. That experience translates directly into better coaching and safer sessions.
Longboarding demands the right equipment. At DREAD OR DEAD, we mainly use hard surfboards because they offer better performance, glide, and feedback. For children or cautious beginners, soft boards are available on request, because safety always comes first.
Every surf lesson includes:
Surfboard
Rashguards
Reef boots (on request)
We also offer longboard rentals and sales, so if you fall in love with longboarding in Barbados, you can keep the experience going beyond your lesson.
Longboard Surfing Barbados is about lifestyle as much as technique. That’s why we also provide:
Guided surf tours
Surfboard repairs
Bodyboards, skimboards, and skateboards
Suits, towels, jackets, and beanies
Perfect stay assistance for surf travelers
We help visitors plan their surfing vacation, handle logistics, and maximize water time—so you can focus on waves, not stress.
We’ve been teaching surfing in Barbados for over 25 years, making us the original and founding surf school on the island. Our lessons run twice daily, our instructors are trained and experienced, and our approach is rooted in respect for the ocean and the sport.
What started as one or two lessons a month now runs every day, twice a day, but our commitment hasn’t changed. We are grateful to our friends, family, colleagues, and customers who supported us over the years—this community is why DREAD OR DEAD exists.
If you’re searching for Longboard Surfing Barbados that’s authentic, safe, and guided by true local surfers, we’re here. Whether you’re catching your first wave or refining classic longboard style, we’ll help you experience Barbados the way it’s meant to be surfed—with flow, respect, and stoke.
