Postdoc positions at Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Department of Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong invites applications for one postdoctoral position, in collaboration with Professor Bangti Jin. The position is an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in applied and computational mathematics, especially inverse problems, numerical analysis, and machine learning.

The term of appointment will be one year with the possibility of two additional years contingent upon satisfactory performance. The term of appointment may commence anytime on or after July 1, 2022.

Responsibilities and qualifications

You will be part of a team with expertise in many areas of inverse problems and scientific computing. Together with the team, you will contribute to developing mathematical theory and computational methods for solving inverse problems. Current research topics within the team include (but not limited to): Stochastic iterative methods for inverse problems, Neural networks for solving PDE inverse problems, Inverse problems for differential equations (e.g., fractional diffusion), Numerical methods for differential equations, and Adaptive methods for topology optimization, etc.

During the research stay, you will either develop new algorithms or conduct mathematical analysis on of these potential topics.

Candidates must have obtained a PhD preceding the start date of appointment in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related fields, and have a strong background and track record of accomplishment in analysis, inverse problems, or machine learning. A strong background in analysis (real analysis, functional analysis, PDEs) or outstanding programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is essential. Previous experience in numerical methods for PDEs (finite difference, finite element), PDE theory, deep learning (PyTorch/TensorFlow) is highly desirable.
