In May 1972, a special meeting was held, with no speaker. Prior to the meeting a questionnaire was given to all members to complete and return. It was pointed out that the Club after two years had run out of its own speakers. In addition to this members’ views on the Club in general were invited. Members were generally happy with the format but did produce the following suggestions: 1. Occasional meetings with no speakers. 2. “Outside” speakers could be invited. 3. During the summer months outside visits could replace Speaker-meetings. As a consequence of the above Norman Scroxton conducted a tour round Broughton Castle and the evening ended convivially at George Clark’s home in North Newington. The Club gave a donation to Lord Saye and Sele of £4.50.
At the December A.G.M. in 1973 it was agreed that the Chairman, Secretary, John Smith, and H. Sanderson would be authorised as a sub-committee to deal with the admission of new members. It was also agreed that there would be no objection to the occasional woman speaker. At the December A.G.M. in 1977 it was decided that the present membership of 35 members should be the maximum membership and that no more members be admitted until vacancies occurred.
At the December A.G.M. in 1981 George Clark agreed to continue as Chairman, Cyril Young became Treasurer and Ron Hobbs wasappointed Secretary. At this meeting it was decided that a list of “host” members would be drawn up annually, and each member would be asked to provide a Speaker in turn for the monthly meetings During these years several Winter meetings were cancelled due to heavy falls of snow. Towards the end of 1989 Ron Hobbs phoned Hugh Spottiswoode to say that George Clark had completed 20 years as Chairman and wanted to retire. Hugh voiced the view that he thought that being Chairman was a one-year job and that he should be supported by a Vice-Chairman who would become his successor. Ted Clark then succeeded his brother as Chairman in December 1990 and Hugh agreed to be Ted’s Vice-Chairman. In the event this didn’t happen because in November 1991 Hugh fractured his right hip and asked for his appointment to be deferred a year. Ted agreed to stay on as Chairman for a second year and Hugh as his Vice-Chairman also for a second year.
