At this point it is appropriate to mention the impact that Ron Hobbs had on the Club. Ron was Secretary of the Club from 1982 until 1998 and he consistently organised several pleasurable events every year. These included a Member’s Lunch, a Strawberry Tea, a Ladies Night Dinner, an outside visit and a Theatre trip. When the strawberries were ready for picking Ron collected one or two of the members and they would go out to the fields along the Broughton Road and pick enough strawberries for the Strawberry Tea.
Various members with large gardens would host the event over the years. Everyone took a cake or a plate of sandwiches and afterwards everyone helped with the washing up. The strawberry Tea has become a regular feature even today “2023” It was Dick Paxman who suggested holding a fortnightly coffee morning and Ron organised this. Ron understood that it had to be on a Tuesday because the golfers were otherwise engaged on Monday mornings. These events are now an integral part of the Probus year. Ron Hobbs died in August 2004 while the previous edited History was being written.
