Minutes of the inaugural meeting of the Club held on Monday 8 June 1970 at 7.30 in the Whately Hall hotel. Present :- Messrs. N. Scroxton (Convener), A. Cheney, C. Croft, H. Golding, Dr. Hudson, Messrs. F. Miles, W. Wadley, W. Watts, E. Willis, and D. Wood. Representing the Rotary Club of Banbury: Rotarian J. Pearson Smith (President), Rotarian J. Smith (Chairman of Community Services Committee) and Rotarian H. Sanderson. Apologies :- Prof. Brinkworth, Rotarian G. Clark, and Messrs. F. Gainey and J. Mc.Dougall.
Rotarian J. Pearson Smith took the Chair and sincerely thanked Mr. Scroxton as convener, for calling the meeting and welcomed all members present. It was unanimously agreed that with such a good attendance the club should be formed. Some members felt that the originally suggested name of Probus was not altogether suitable and after much discussion it was decided to leave the name of the club open until the next meeting.
It was decided to invite Rotarian G. Clark to be the first Chairman of the Club. It was considered that a Vice -Chairman was not required and in the absence from a meeting of the Chairman a founder member of the club should be elected Chairman for the day. Mr. N. Scroxton was elected Treasurer/Secretary with Rotarian J. E. Smith as Assistant Secretary. At this stage of the club it was decided that no formal rules would be laid down other than the club would meet once a month on the second Monday at 7.30 p.m.
Venue for the next two meetings to be the Whately Hall Hotel. Subsriptions :- To be £1 0s. 0d. per annum and would be reviewed atthe end of six months. Programme :- The initial meetings to be informal but speakers, discussions and other activities to be introduced from time to time. Date of next Meeting :- Monday 13 July 1970 and Monday 10 August 1970, both at 7.30 p.m. at the Whately Hall Hotel. The members then took beer and sandwiches and thanked the Rotary Club of Banbury for their hospitality.
