What is a Reading Challenge?
For the three longer school breaks each year - Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring - the PTO holds a reading challenge. During the break, students read as many minutes as possible and record how many minutes they read each day. The PTO sets a total minute goal for each break (depending on the number of days in the break).
Every student who reaches the goal for that break receives a prize and is entered into a drawing for the Star Table. The Star Table is a specially decorated table set aside at a chosen lunch period where the Star Readers and a friend of their choosing get to sit for lunch. One student who met the reading goal is selected from each classroom. The kids all love the chance to sit at the Star Table!
The reader in each classroom with the highest number of minutes receives a special prize. In the past, prizes have included gift cards to local eateries.
The top reader for each grade receives a special bonus prize for their great job!*
The reading challenges for 2019-2020 include:
THANKSGIVING | November 27 - December 1 | Goal of 120 minutes
WINTER | December 21 - January 5 | Goal of 300 minutes
SPRING | March 13 - 22 | Goal of 200 minutes
*Prizes are never doubled up (examples: In the classroom that has the Top Reader for their grade, the runner-up reader becomes the Top Classroom Reader for that room. Top Grade Readers and Top Classroom Readers are not eligible to be in the drawing for the Star Table (though a Star Table participant may select them as their chosen friend for lunch if they want to)).
