The Metal Rattlesnake will be ...conjured!
The atmosphere on Prowdeekee 4 was the color of dried rust and also tasted faintly metallic. Above, a colossal ringed planet dominated the sky. Its shadow a cool velvet blanket cutting across the crimson sand. This was the Metal Desert and tonight two figures stood ready to conjure sound from the silence. To conjure sound and by that to call upon the legendary Metal Rattlesnake.
On the left stood Cybaernaut, encased in obsidian-black segmented armor that absorbed the faint starlight. A custom-forged five-string bass guitar rested against his hip like an extension of his own chassis. His stance was wide, rooted in the shifting ferrous granules. On the right was Auradox, sleek in a midnight-blue suit that concealed a lattice of kinetic energy conduits. His helmet was a seamless visor of glowing cobalt focused intently on the task ahead. He held a pair of weighted drumsticks, not only for striking his traditional kit but for conducting the desert itself.
Auradox raised his sticks but they weren't just sticks. They were resonant sensors. As they cut the air the rhythmic impact points were not sound waves but sub-harmonic seismic pulses. The deep heavy beat didn't travel through the air as much as it traveled through the ground. The desert floor vibrated and the low-frequency pulses resonated off the distant black basalt rock formations. Cybaernaut’s fingers danced across the bass strings. The sound was not just the traditional growl of a metal guitar but also a clean profound thrum - a melodic anchor against the driving rhythm. Fault lines tracing the deep geological scars of the planet with sound formed into bizarre chords. Thus the ballads began. Mournful tales of long-dead stars and machines that outlived their gods.
Suddenly a disturbance in the background coalesced. From behind a vast dark rock that resembled a petrified dune emerged a colossal snake. Its scales were like polished hematite and its eyes glowed with an eerie predatory blue light matching Auradox' visor. It dwarfed the musicians. Its colossal body a living river of metal and malice. Yet the serpent wasn't an enemy. It was their audience, their amplifier and their greatest critic. Its very presence warped the atmosphere. As the serpent rose the music moved into a first crescendo. Notes became faster - a staccato torrent of bass licks that seemed to challenge the creature. Auradox responded by slamming his sticks together creating a brilliant high-pitched sound that was instantly swallowed and re-emitted by the snake’s vibrating coils. The creature coiled tighter its head swaying. Its presence an immense natural stage hazard. The music was now a duet between man-made rhythm and primal terror. The tempo slowed. Cybearnaut held a long sustaining note. Deep B that seemed to pierce the crust of the planet. This was the core of the ballad: a moment of raw exposed feeling. Auradox' sticks swept gently conjuring a faint ethereal melody from the wind itself - the sound of a forgotten siren singing across the desert's desolate expanse.
The Serpent’s blue eyes fixed on the duo. It didn't strike. It listened. It was captivated by the sheer audacity of two armored beings creating such profound beauty in a world dedicated to silent decay. The final crescendo arrived. Cybearnaut hammered a rapid-fire succession of low notes, driving the rhythm back into the ground. Auradox’ sticks blurred hitting a series of complex time signatures that made the sand visibly jump and dance. The Metal Rattlesnake let out a sound - not exactly a roar but a deep resonating pulse that shook the very dust motes. It was applause amplified a thousandfold.
As the final reverberating note faded the Serpent slowly uncoiled dipping its head in acknowledgment before disappearing back into the shadows cast by the ringed planet. For a brief moment there was nothing to here but the rattling of the snake’s tail. Then finally silence returned, heavier now. Filled with the echo of their performance. Cybearnaut lowered his bass and Auradox dropped his arms. They were two lone armored figures standing on a world that had tried to swallow sound yet had yielded to their metallic music. "Another ballad for the archives," Cybearnaut's synthesized voice stated, his armor ticking as it cooled. "The Serpent seemed to enjoy," Auradox replied, his visor dimming slightly. And with the desert as their silent witness they packed up their instruments of gravity and vibration ready for the next desolate stage in the galaxy.
