Baldwin
D-911 Hauptwerk project

12/20/2020

Electronic organ developed problems after extended period of not being used -

Great manual did not sound - only swell and coupled swell/great -

Not sure what caused this issue - lacked troubleshooting knowledge to fix issue -

Repair would require expensive visit from organ tech.

Repair would most likely only be temporary as these model electronic organs have many issues with internal circuitry.

Decision was made to invest in audio interface required for using organ with Hauptwerk. Converting the organ from a digital/electronic organ to a virtual organ.

Hauptwerk documentation is understandable -

Special thanks to the folks over on organforum.com

this youtube video was particularly useful:

How to Control Hauptwerk from a commercial organ

Baldwin organ has midi in/out - allows basic midi functionality with manuals and pedals - not stops -

Installed trial version of Hauptwerk on windows 10 laptop - 8 gigs ram, i5 intel processor - (8 cores) - 1.00 GHz

Software installation: sign up for Hauptwerk account and download Hauptwerk (H/w) software and sign up for licensing account through ILOK -

Run H/w installer as admin - initial install will throw some errors until H/w trial license is matched up with ILOK utility --

Initial trial of H/w was successful - using a simple midi/usb adapter, keyboards and pedals were recognized using keyboard wizard - simple enough -

Issue was the latency between the organ and the laptop sound out -- the delay between keyboard and sound was too long in order to play the organ normally -

setup with laptop's internal sound card -

sound delay over 20 is noticable and not playable

Don't use any driver other than ASIO

Always use ASIO - buffer size is middle selection - lower buffer provides lower latency

very acceptable sound delay (latency) number

for testing purposes 256 polyphony is acceptable

basic setup - laptop and a keyboard amp -

key to success was changing to a quality usb audio interface between laptop and speaker - usb audio interface provided much lower latency between midi input and sound out

Presonus Studio 24c has onboard midi in/out so everything needed for H/w was on this audio interface - midi and usb connection to laptop. Sound out through main L/out - mono out to mono in on keyboard amp.

Experimented with sending sound out from Presonus into aux in on organ, but sound quality was better using keyboard amp.
