BakerShake as we know it started in the spring of 1970 when the college put on the first Shakespeare play. It was such a smashing hit, that they did it two more times, then on a non-Shakespeare play for what must have seemed like a good reason at the time, then went back to Shakespeare every spring for another 40 years. Which makes Baker Shakespeare Theater the longest running Shakespeare festival in Houston. (HSF would disagree because they don't acknowledge our existence.)
Over the years, we’ve had mostly student and alumni directors, though we’ve also had Actors From The London Stage people and RSC people come and direct. How did we bag those big names? Who knows!? Above is a running history of the plays we’ve performed, what year, and who directed. Maybe you'll be next on the list?
Some additional information can be found on the Baker College website, here.
