A Cape Cod Catboat with original or junk rig alternatives
Bagor is a Cape Cod Catboat built by ourselves to plans from the well known naval architect Ted Brewer of Canada. She is build from sapele ( mahogany) frames and sheathed in marine ply ( 20mm below chine 15 mm above chine. The hull and decks were covered in fiberglass and epoxy before fairing and painting. The construction was completed in 2010 when she was registered with SSR which offers a number of advantages in terms of annual costs and navigation rules. Since that time she has spent 5 month s of each year in the water ( mainly la Vilaine river but latterly in the gulf of Morbihan, The rest of the time she has been stored on the hard and under cover. The spars have been varnished every other year and she was repainted completely this last winter,
The Cape Cod Catboat is well known in the USA and today the association has over 1000 members . The boat was initially developed in the 1800’s on the US east coast for commercial fishing and coastal transport. The design was adopted later as a “party boat” for the bourgeoise to take their families and friends out in the enormous cockpit. The design features incorporated a single gaff sail on a mast mounted well forward in the bows , a large “barn door “ rudder. The mast is keel mounted and fixed with wedges at the deck level.
This example Won the Bronze axe award from the Catboat Association and incorporates high quality components . The mast and spars are made from Douglas Pine and Sitka spruce by Philippe Simon a talented and well renknowed marine carpenter from Ferel ( La Roche Bernard ) The bronze mast and rudder fittings were made by Classic Marine , Woodbridge UK, the steering system is from Edson USA and the portlights are all matching and in Bronze. A bronze stem head completes the deck fittings. The Gaff sail of 37m2 was supplied by Starvoile Arzon and all the upholstery and sail covers were professionally made.
Accomodations
The cockpit is surrounded by deep lockers , the coaming of the cocpit is about 2.5 meters square and can easily seat ten people. Entering the cabin you find the head compartment to starboard with the electrics panel. To port is the galley with lockers , Origo (alcohol ) two burner stove. And foot pump fresh water supply to the sink.
Moving forward to Starboard is a hanging locker then a 2 meter long berth ( I am 1m92 ) To port is a normal length berth. Each berth has lockers under. The cabin is divided longtitudinally by the centerboard box which acts as a seat for working at the galley and as a support for the custom made table which can be positioned anywhere along the centerboard box.
The forepeak allows storage of various items and houses the mast base and the anchor chain locker.
Mechanics
A Beta 20 hp motor is fitted in a locker under the cockpit floor for very easy access , The drive shaft is fitted with a three blade prop and a Volvo dripless seal. Two 97 AH batteries were fitted 2018 and are charged by the alternator or a fitted shore supply charger.
The Centreboard is a plate of galvanized steel , raised and lowered by a winch mounted under a cockpit locker. The winch is a standard equipment for the Jaguar 22 ( Catalina 22) which incorporates a clutch rather than the usual figer eating ratchet system.
Ventilation
A central glass hatch is fitted together with six opening portlights .
A Dorade box and ventilator complete the ventilation.
Junk Rig
Although Bagor was built as a gaff rigged Catboat to the plans , we found, as we moved into our seventies, we wanted a smaller area rig which was easier to reef. I therefore made a complete junk rig with aluminium battens and a 35m2 tarpaulin sail. ( this was copied from a number of authors including the Astronomer Royal of Scotland for the tarpaulin material and Arne Kverneland for the sail design ) This rig works extremely well and the solid Pine Mast lends itself well to this rig.
In any case the buyer gets the lot and can choose !!
