This was the first A-12 ever built, being built and delivered in 1962 as a successor to the U-2. Its first flight was an unintentional liftoff during a high-speed taxi, followed by an official first flight the next day. After many tests, it began its service. It performed a total of 322 missions from 1964 to 1968. It was in storage from 1968 to 1991 when it was placed in the Blackbird Airpark.

This was the 24th SR-71 Blackbird built, being built during 1966 and 1967. It flew on 62 training missions and 45 sorties during its lifetime in the USAF. In May 1987, during an airshow, the aircraft was damaged during a bad takeoff. It was ferried back to Palmdale and the decision was made to retire the aircraft instead of repairing it. It was stored then put in the Blackbird Airpark in 1991.
