N103 was built in 1943 as a C-54A (DC-4) for the United States Air Force. It was there for 3 years, being bought by a civilian owner in 1946 (N54373). It had a Luxembourg registration (LX-BNG) from 1961 to 1962, serving with the UN and Interocean Airways. It served with BAF (G-ASDC) and Pacific Air Express (N103) before ending its service with Hondu Carib Cargo.
On June 28, 1997, N103 took off from Venetie Airport to be repositioned to Fairbanks. Engine #2 caught fire and fell off mid flight, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing. All 3 on board survived the crash.
Notably, the wreckage is missing the ATL-98's famous '747 Ripoff' front fuselage, so it was probably partially salvaged.
