I couldn't find any background info on 51-001, but it is LIKELY that it only served with the USAF.
51-001 was flying from Mountain Home AFB to San Diego on January 24, 1952. While over Death Valley, an engine failed. The crew of 6 all parachuted out of the aircraft and all survived. The unmanned SA-16 continued on until crashing.
The wreckage was too remote to salvage, and remains in good condition due to the dry heat of Death Valley.
