In the winter of 1952, this B-17 was flying to Tacoma McChord AFB after helping search for the wreck of a USAF C-54 that went missing while flying from Alaska to Montana. While over the Olympic mountains, the aircraft encountered a violent winter storm. The aircraft was pushed down without the pilots noticing. The aircraft clipped the top of some trees and then crashed into the side of the mountain, sliding down hundreds of feet. 5 of the 8 on board survived.
The remote wreckage was not salvaged, and now is a hike.
