44-61999 was only operated by the USAF. It was nicknamed 'Over Exposed!' with nose art that I definitely can't show here. It was used for photography, including taking pictures of nuclear bomb tests. It also served in the Berlin Airlift.
On November 3, 1948, a flight of 3 B-29s took off from RAF Scampton enroute to RAF Burtonwood. 'Over Exposed!' was one of them. Its mission: Carry some wages for the workers at Burtonwood. There were low clouds out, cutting off any view of the ground. Part of the flight took it over some hills, forcing the aircraft to ascend. After some time, the crew initiated descent, believing that they were past the hills based on the flight time. They weren't. 'Over Exposed!' crashed, killing all 13 crew members and passengers on board. However, somehow, the money survived!
The wreck was partially salvaged and has been slowly picked apart by souvenir seekers. One of the turrets was moved to a museum, with permission.
