The last flight of 39-052 was on January 29, 1943. 39-052 was returning to Tacoma McChord AFB after a training mission in Nevada. Mid flight, it ran into a snowstorm. The plane began to descend and the pilot decided to divert to Boise. While on approach, lots of icing formed on the aircraft and the crew realized that they weren't going to make it. They spotted a frozen-over lake and decided to land there. On the first approach, frozen flaps forced a go-around. The aircraft successfully touched down on the second attempt. The plane slid past the ice and crashed into the trees. Everybody survived the landing mostly unharmed, and they were later rescued.
The wreckage was partially salvaged but most of it remains at the site.
