On May 30, 1943, 52-5318 'Bomber 318' taxied out from its parking spot in Marysville. It was set to fly to Eugene, Oregon as part of a 12 bomber training exercise. The weather was poor that day, even though the exercise was supposed to take off in clear weather. The bomber was cleared to take off anyways.
The flight began as usual, but eventually radar contact with Bomber 318 was lost. When contact was established again, the bomber was far off course near Medford! After some time, radar contact was lost again - and it never came back. After a long search, the bomber was presumed lost at sea.
Over a month later, the wreckage was discovered by accident. It didn't take long for the wreck to be identified as Bomber 318. All 6 crewmembers had perished.
The wreckage was mostly salvaged but some remains at the site.
