I couldn't find any information about when this B-17 was built, but there is no doubt that it only served with the USAF.
On June 28, 1944, 42-97169 took off from Yuma Army Airfield on a routine training mission. The aircraft was descending to land back at Yuma in the middle of the night when the incident occured. The pilot apparently did not see the hill below him as he was descending using Yuma's lights as a guide. All 5 on board perished.
Most wreckage has been buried by rocks but some is still visible.
