How to Play Badugi - Rules, Strategy and Tips

Ground rules

Badugi is usually played using the classic big blind-small blind structure .

This means that each hand begins with the small blind and big blind posting blinds. The small blind is usually half the big blind. The blinds are always the players sitting to the left of the dealer button. The action begins to the left of the BB at the Under the Gun (UTG for short) position.

Each player receives four cards face down . UTG speaks first. You have the option to either call, fold or raise the blind. If they fold, their cards are dead and they give up the pot. If they raise, the other players must put at least the increased amount into the pot to stay in the hand. If nobody calls, the last raiser wins the pot. If there is at least one caller, the hand continues.

After the first round of betting, players can discard 1-4 of their cards and draw 1-4 new cards. You can also not draw any cards at all , which is often referred to as "stay pat." Another round of betting follows.

After that, the players can draw again . In this street, however, the betting limit is doubled. Now the players can place a so-called “big bet”.

The final drawing is the third followed by the final betting round . The showdown comes next.

The 4-card hand with the lowest high card wins the pot . This is what separates Badugi from other types of lowball poker - only one card per suit counts. If you have four cards of all suits, you have a badugi . The best is a 4-low badugi (A234, all off-suit), while the worst is a king-low badugi. The ace is always low .

If you have a three suit hand, you don't have Badugi - but you can still win a hand. Now you have a 3-card hand - one card of each suit - that loses to any 4-card hand but can beat other 3-card hands. For example, if you have Js7s6c4d, you are holding a 3-card hand (7-low 3-card hand). For example, you can beat KhQH2s3c but lose to KsAc9h8d, a king-low badugi. The same goes for 2 and 1 card hands - since they almost never show down well, we recommend folding or bluffing rather than calling them down.

When players run out of cards to draw, the discarded deck is reshuffled and dealt again.

Basic strategy

In Badugi, just like in other draw games, you try to give your opponent a range based on the number of cards drawn and betting habits. You need to gauge how much equity your hand has relative to your opponent's range and invest money in the pot accordingly.

Badugi tends to have a lot fewer hands that go to showdown than other draw games. This is because having 4 cards from the 4 different suits is quite rare, but players don't like to call with less than a badugi on the last street. You can of course take advantage of this. If you are in position and see your opponent draw on the last round, stay pat, place a big bet and expect folds. Be mindful of your betting frequency though - if you do this too often, the others might be willing to call more often.

Overall, players tend to play Badugi tighter than other draw games, which means they fold more hands before the draw game. This seems advisable for everyone.

Playing stay pat with a weak hand to indicate strength and then betting as a bluff is a move known as "snowing" and is commonly used in all types of draw games. Please note that Badugi is almost always a limit game - this means that at the end of the hand you usually can't help but give your opponent pretty good pot odds. Skilled players will probably notice this and call with a larger range even with 3-card hands.

Story

Badugi probably comes from South Korea. The name of the game means "black and white spotted dog" in Korean. The game Go has a similar name in Korean, "baduk", derived from the same word.

The game gained popularity in the early 2000s when PokerStars added it to their selection and used its famous ambassadors, like Daniel Negreanu, to promote it. They also hosted the first WCOOP (World Championship of Online Poker) tournament in Badugi in 2009 , which was won by Raymond Davis. Obviously, the game itself has been played live for much longer, many say since the 1980s in Korea. Some claim they saw it in Canada in the 80's under the name "Off Suit Lowball".

Badugi doesn't have its own WSOP event per se, but it does feature in the Dealers Choice and Triple Draw Mix Mixed Game tournaments.

Notable Badugi professionals

Many famous players have talked about playing badugi with fondness.

Jean-Robert Bellande, a cash game pro, once said in an interview that it's one of his favorite games because it's fairly new and his opponents tend to make mistakes more often than in the more established poker variants.

German poker pro George Danzer gave an interview in which he spoke at length about Badugi's strategy. “KidPoker”, Daniel Negreanu , also mentioned the game publicly on several occasions.

As we previously wrote, Badugi is featured in two World Series of Poker mixed game events . In 2018, Johannes Becker won the $2,500 mixed triple draw event for $180,000. The $10,000 Dealers Choice was won by Adam Friedman for $293,275.
