Before you try any of the solutions, make sure that you have the latest updates and patches installed for Backup Exec and your operating system. Also, make sure that your backup device and media are working properly and are supported by Backup Exec. You can check the compatibility list [here].
Solution 1: Confirm the status and availability of the backup device and media
The first thing you should do is to check if the backup device and media that you specified for the job are online and accessible in Backup Exec. To do this, follow these steps:
Open Backup Exec and go to the Devices tab.
Locate the backup device and media that you want to use for the job. If they are online, they should have a green check mark next to them. If they are offline, they should have a red X mark next to them.
If the backup device or media is offline, right-click on it and select Online. If it does not come online, check the physical connection and power of the device and media, and make sure that they are not in use by another process or application.
If the backup device or media is online, right-click on it and select Properties. Check the settings and configuration of the device and media, such as the name, description, location, serial number, driver, firmware, etc. Make sure that they match with the actual device and media that you have.
If you have made any changes to the properties of the device or media, click OK to save them. Then, right-click on the device or media again and select Inventory. This will update the information of the device or media in Backup Exec.
After the inventory is completed, try to run the backup or inventory job again and see if it works.
Solution 2: Restart the Backup Exec services
Sometimes, restarting the Backup Exec services can resolve some issues with the backup device and media. To do this, follow these steps:
Open Backup Exec and go to Tools > Backup Exec Services > Services Credentials.
Make sure that all the Backup Exec services except for "Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers" are running under an account that has local administrator privileges. If not, change the account and enter the correct password.
Click OK to save the changes.
Go to Tools > Backup Exec Services > Services Control.
Click on Stop All Services to stop all the Backup Exec services.
Wait for a few minutes until all the services are stopped.
Click on Start All Services to start all the Backup Exec services again.
Wait for a few minutes until all the services are started.
Try to run the backup or inventory job again and see if it works.
Solution 3: Rename or recreate the catalog files
The catalog files are files that store information about your backup sets and media. Sometimes, they can get corrupted or outdated, causing errors with your backup device and media. To fix this, you can try to rename or recreate the catalog files. To do this, follow these steps:
Open Backup Exec and go to Tools > Options > Catalog.
Uncheck the box that says "Use storage media-based catalogs".
Click OK to save the changes.
Close Backup Exec.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where the catalog files are stored. By default, it is C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalogs.
Rename the existing catalogs folder as "catalogs.old".
Create a new catalogs folder in the same location.
Restart all the Backup Exec services as described in Solution 2.
Open Backup Exec and go to Tools > Options > Catalog.
Check the box that says "Use storage media-based catalogs".
Click OK to save the changes.
Right-click on the backup device or media that you want to use for the job and select Inventory and Catalog. This will create new catalog files for the device and media.
After the inventory and catalog are completed, try to run the backup or inventory job again and see if it works.
