Bachata dance style is a form of social dance that originated in the Dominican Republic in the 1960's and it is a form of Latin social dance. Bachata almost never made it outside of the Dominican Republic because a dictator named Trujillo, who preferred Merengue to Bachata, almost stopped it from gaining popularity. Seeing both music and dance as the lowest forms of art, he banned them both and called them the lowest forms of art. There are still some underground bars and brothels that dance the bachata, so far as I know. Nowadays, bachata is a dance that is danced all over the world and it has evolved into many other styles of dance that are based on it.
As Bachata has become more popular in the community, it can be divided into 3 types. In detail, they are as follows:
Dominican Bachata
Sensual Bachata
Modern Bachata
Dominican bachata, or in some cases called traditional bachata, is a dance that is performed to the rhythm of bachata music that ranges from medium to fast tempo. In its original form, this step was danced front to back, but now it's danced side to side in a rhythm that makes 8 counts. There are a lot of footwork, and syncopated steps involved in the connection, and most of the connection is open. On the fourth beat, there is an exaggerated "pop" on the hips of the follower, which is a more rhythmic pattern. Dancing Dominican will definitely get you in the mood for a sweaty workout!
It was Korke and Judith who created sensual bachata in the late 90's. Basically, the sensual style is danced in a slow to moderate tempo to the bachata music. As a result, you are able to create a more defined connection with your partner, allowing the lead to take advantage of the music to create sensual movements like body rolls, sensual waves, dips and isolations as the lead takes up the music. It is also important to note that the fourth beat hip movement for the following song is a more sensual one, rather than creating a traditional "pop", but rather a figure eight movement. It is a combination of less footwork, more turns, but there is also the opportunity to disconnect from your partner at some point and show off a little bit within most songs. It is more global than sensual bachata, and it is the main reason bachata is so well known all over the world. The sensual bachata is often compared to the most desirable girl in town some people.
Among the many forms of bachata that exist, urban bachata is the latest. It is based on the basic rhythm of the bachata, but incorporates other styles of dance such as Tango and Bolero as well. Additionally, it can also be a combination of Dominican and sensual patterns with more open hand patterns if desired. On the 4th beat of every bachata style, modern/urban keeps true to the hip movement that is so prevalent in all the bachata styles.
