The Best Board Games:

Settlers of Catan and Firefly the Game

Settlers of Catan

Settlers of Catan is a fantasy classic and tremendously popular, so I'm quite surprised that it isn't in the top ten. (The fourth edition bundle continues to hover in the mid-teens.) It has some features of a cooperative game, since it requires players to trade resources in order to accomplish their goals (building roads and settlements). It's appropriate for both adults and older children.

A new expansion for the game, Explorers and Pirates, was released in 2013. Although it's been in the top ten list for new releases, the few reviews I've seen weren't entirely favorable; the major complaints seem to be that (1) the board and pieces aren't up to the quality levels of the original game, and (2) it's too similar to earlier expansions. There's also some debate about whether this expansion can be used with others, such as Seafarers.

Settlers of Catan requires three or four players, although my understanding is that you really need four players for it to be satisfying. (Sadly, I've never played for this very reason: not enough people!) There are also plenty of expansions that work with the original board and either increase the complexity of play or let you add more players (up to two more, for a total of six).

Firefly: the Game

I strongly suspect that Firefly: the Game is one of the most anticipated releases of 2013. I know that I was incredibly excited when I heard about it (as were my Browncoat friends), despite the lack of initial information available. The game has finally been released and has been well reviewed by fans. Everyone agrees that tremendous effort was taken to incorporate the theme and elements from the show, and those efforts paid off in a big way. This one's going to be on a lot of Christmas gift lists this year!

This strategy game can be played solo or with multiple players. Each player leads their own ship and must recruit crew members and find work to keep their ship flying.

While the specs say that each game takes about 2 hours, reviewers have said that 3 or 4 hours is more realistic.
