But in my last video, my subject handles items that are light blue / cyan, and I started to notice that those items shift color and become an unnatural blue, it looks like contrast has been pushed A LOT after applying the chroma key effect, I never noticed that before (probably because this color is quite greenish).

But this is not how I thought chroma key was working. I thought it was just removing the parts of the video that was matching the selected color (+some margin) and not touch the other parts/colors of the video.

And indeed, testing it with several other tools (Adobe After Effects, Lightworks, and the NewBlueFX chroma key plugin), it does exactly what I expect : remove the background and doesn't touch the colors that doesn't match. Only the default chroma key plugin seem to do that.

I would guess that it is trying to correct for green highlights in the chromakeyed video and overdoing it. It's relatively common for green screen footage to have greenish reflections due to light bouncing off the green wall back on to subjects. The chroma-key effect may be attempting to automatically correct this and catching objects that have no such reflections in the crossfire. I would expect it to be a setting that can be turned on and off, but I'm not familiar enough with Vegas to take a guess as to what it might be called there.

Ok, I know it won't help you much now after 4,5 years, but i found roundabout for those still looking. Set up color corrector (secondary) with hue rotation 180, then chroma keyer, then color corrector (secondary) with hue rotation 180 again. It's not perfect as you'll have to play around with the slider, but at least you won't have to switch/download other programs.

I'm performing some tests with the chroma key, I already noticed that blue screen will not perform well for me (the subject is often in black, which doesn't match well with blue), so I got a green screen.

My problem is that it is not absolutely perfect because of the lighting and I find that the chroma key effect is lacking some options. I'd love to have the kind of options I can get with the Secundary color corrector effect (with this one, I was able to replace my first blue screen with a flashy green ! But the same imperfections are still there).

My question is : what can I do to improve the quality of the chroma keyer match, in term of effects or settings, in Sony Vegas (not considering the lighting, I'm already working on getting better lights, but I guess there will always be some imperfections that I want to be able to deal with).Is there any other plugins (free or reasonably priced) that have more options for the keyer ?

Review Vegas Chroma Key: Once you engage the chroma key effect, use the eye dropper and take a sample of the green screen to set the baseline color, engage the mask and tweak the level until you get a flat black on the screen area and white everywhere else then turn the mask off. If this can not be done then something in the basics above was not done correctly.

Everything that Filzilla said is great and on point. BUT the standard chromakey plugin that comes with Vegas is lacking. There really is no way to get around it. So I recently did a stream on my Twitch channel where I basically just screwed around in front of a green screen for an hour and a half, so my viewers could like edit things into the background and stuff. And I put a few images in the background during the stream a couple times, and it looked great. But afterwards when I went to put some of the clips into Sony Vegas Pro 17, when I tried Chroma Key it looked really bad. Like I couldn't key the whole green screen out without keying myself out too. I know it's not a problem with my green screen lighting, cuz like I said it worked great on streamlabs. Any idea as to why this is happening? Or any software out there that's better with green screens than vegas?

One of the most-used and time-honored visual effects techniques is chroma key. Simply put, chroma key involves shooting a subject against a solid-color background, and then removing that background in post-production, replacing it with transparency. Then, the subject can be placed in front of any new background.

Keep your subjects away from your background to avoid casting shadows or unwanted light on it, and also to minimize the amount of green or blue spill coming from the background and showing up on your subjects. The chroma key effect will remove any spill on your subject just like the background, so parts of your subject will disappear if you're not careful.

Use secondary color correction to punch up and even out the background color before applying chroma key effect, adjusting the saturation of the background separate from the subject. Smooth out any unevenness in the lighting and bring the saturation and brightness to optimal levels. Use the waveform scope to guide you.

Now, apply the chroma key effect. Use the eyedropper tool to select the exact color of your background. Then use threshold sliders as needed to adjust the parameters of the key. You can also apply a blur to the edges.

The standard Chroma key effect in VEGAS Pro is very good, but the chroma key tools in VEGAS Effects and VEGAS Image are even better, with extra tools like spill suppression and light wrapping giving you even more detailed control to achieve perfect keys and seamless composites.

Can Anyone help me. when ever I chroma key it always leaves behind a green (or whatever the screen color is) and i dony know how to fix it since im pretty new with sony vegas. If you can help It would be wonderful.

Additionally Coen, if you are doing serious keying and compositing jobs,

investing in an alternative chroma keying plugin is advisable.

Like BorisFX Chroma key studio or Hitfilm Plugins Chroma key filter, these

are best of the bunch.

Edit2: I just rebooted into Windoze7 (which I am loath to do) and installed VideoEnhancer2. I retrieved the VHS filter plugin, disabled all the options except for Chroma shift and set the vertical and horizontal shift to negative 10. Ran a 720x480 video and saw the rather extreme chroma offset, proving the VirtualDub VHS filter obviously works for this purpose. Setting it to negative 1 or 2 in each dimension ought to fix the problem nicely.

Next day edit: I just tried looking through the video filters in Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10 HD Platinum and could not find a function for altering the timing of the chroma channels. I have only seen this in AviSynth and VirtualDub.

The Sony Alpha II is a full frame camera and good at both stills and video. The problem for video is it is it being full frame. Meaning that compared to an APS-C sized sensor (the next sized sensor down for Digital interchangeable lens cameras.) an f2.8 stop on a lens would be the equivalent of an f1.4 stop on the smaller sensor. So you have to stop down any lens you use more than if you used a smaller sensor for video shooting. This is why the Panasonic 4/3rd framed cameras became so popular for video.They have to be stopped down even less to get more depth of field. Stopping down not only gives a greater depth of view but also sharpens edges within the available depth. That in turn means the lens has to be quite high quality to avoid chromatic aberration or (colour fringing) that can change hue depending on the amount of fringing. Also for a given amount of pixels assuming all sensors have the same amount of photo sites (pixels) and are of the same generation sensor, the larger sensor needs less light because each photo-site is larger, and hence shorter exposure time for a given ISO value.

thanks so much for your important insights. I just love the cinematic look of my bigger sensor. On a green screen tutorial i saw someone talk about using a 25mm lens (i'm using 50mm). Maybe i should get a 25mm one? And the T lens sounds very interesting. So the question is, if my sony alpha a7II can get it right with the right lens, or if i would need a different camera? A cinematic look would be preferable for the film i'm making. Do you have any suggestions maybe? Thanks for all your ideas so far and any thoughts you might still have on this :-) !
