PharmCAS is a centralized application service used to apply to multiple Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) programs offered by schools and colleges of pharmacy. The service is designed for first-year professional Pharm.D. degree programs. PharmCAS provides access to individual pharmacy degree program admission requirements in an easy-to-find and standardized format.

Background:  Older adults commonly face challenges in understanding, obtaining, administering, and monitoring medication regimens after hospitalization. These difficulties can lead to avoidable morbidity, mortality, and hospital readmissions. Pharmacist-led peri-discharge interventions can reduce adverse drug events, but few large randomized trials have examined their effectiveness in reducing readmissions. Demonstrating reductions in 30-day readmissions can make a financial case for implementing pharmacist-led programs across hospitals.

Methods/design:  The PHARMacist Discharge Care, or the PHARM-DC intervention, includes medication reconciliation at admission and discharge, medication review, increased communication with caregivers, providers, and retail pharmacies, and patient education and counseling during and after discharge. The intervention is being implemented in two large hospitals: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Brigham and Women's Hospital. To evaluate the intervention, we are using a pragmatic, randomized clinical trial design with randomization at the patient level. The primary outcome is utilization within 30 days of hospital discharge, including unforeseen emergency department visits, observation stays, and readmissions. Randomizing 9776 patients will achieve 80% power to detect an absolute reduction of 2.5% from an estimated baseline rate of 27.5%. Qualitative analysis will use interviews with key stakeholders to study barriers to and facilitators of implementing PHARM-DC. A cost-effectiveness analysis using a time-and-motion study to estimate time spent on the intervention will highlight the potential cost savings per readmission.

Discussion:  If this trial demonstrates a business case for the PHARM-DC intervention, with few barriers to implementation, hospitals may be much more likely to adopt pharmacist-led peri-discharge medication management programs.

The Doctor of Pharmacy is a professional degree similar to the doctor of medicine (M.D.) for physicians or a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) for dentists. The experiences increase in duration and complexity as the student pharmacist gains knowledge and skills, starting with introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) in health-system institution, community, and ambulatory pharmacy settings.

As an accredited program in pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is, therefore, ultimately responsible for student selection and matriculation, curriculum design, implementation and evaluation, and determination of who should be awarded a degree in fulfillment of these requirements.

The academic advising office follows an open door policy in that we encourage pharmacy students to drop by the office to see if an advisor is available. However, in the event an advisor is not available, setting up an appointment at the front desk or contacting them via email then would be recommended.

Effective September 1, 2015, all pharmacists who compound sterile preparations or supervise pharmacy technicians and pharmacy technician trainees compounding sterile preparations must have completed a single course, of a minimum of 20 hours of instruction and experience, from an accredited college of pharmacy or a course sponsored by an ACPE accredited provider per Texas Administrative Code Rule 291.133 (Pharmacies Compounding Sterile Preparations).

To provide pharmacy students with the opportunity to customize their learning experience according to their interests, there are five specialized learning tracks a student can take in addition to the more traditional path to a Pharm.D. degree. These are the: LEADERS, Pediatric Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Urban Service, and Honors tracks.

As the practice of clinical pharmacy becomes more competitive, this track is designed to provide the pharmacy student with tools to help them succeed as a pediatric clinical practitioner. It will allow students interested in pediatric clinical pharmacy to have a multitude of pediatric experiences throughout their time as a pharmacy student and graduate as a Pediatric Pharmacy Scholar. Honors students can tailor their learning within the School of Pharmacy's Pharm.D. program and assist with faculty research or focus on a specific specialty such as diabetes, pain management or pharmacy practice. Honors students work directly with a faculty member who guides and accesses each student's progress from beginning through thesis.

Applicants completing coursework at an institution of higher education in the United States must ensure that the institution is regionally accredited (PDF). College coursework from institutions that are not regionally accredited will not meet the pre-pharmacy course requirements.

Applicants are encouraged to contact an admissions advisor in the Pharmacy Student Affairs Office (pharmacy@umkc.edu) to discuss the strength of their application and whether they should take the PCAT to help their application portfolio.

Acceptance is contingent on submission of a criminal background check, good academic and behavioral standing, and grade C- or higher in the required pre-pharmacy courses. Applicants with grades of S, CR, or P in required courses from the spring 2020 or summer 2020 semesters will suffice.
