2014: Robert G. Ayres

Event: Ayres Field Plaque ~ Persona: Baseball

Rob's paternal grandfather, Russell "Trapper" Romeyn Ayres, was a beloved member of the faculty and varsity baseball coach of Choate School in Wallingford, CT. To honor him, Ayres Field became the name of the baseball field. When Trapper's protogé Tom Yankus retired as varsity baseball coach, there was a move to change the name of the field to Yankus Field. Rob worked hard to make sure the school did not drop "Ayres" from the name of the field. As a result, the field was named Ayres-Yankus Field. When the name plaque was dedicated, a large collection of Trapper's descendants attended. To honor Rob's leadership role in preserving Trapper's name on the baseball field, Cindy presented him with the shot put, painted as a baseball.

Note: The date of the dedication was May 18, 2014. The date of the presentation of the shot put may have been prior to 2014.
