Aylin Yener, Candidate for IEEE VP Technical Activities
The IEEE Annual Election starts on 15 August 2025 and ends at 12:00 p.m. ET (16:00 UTC-04) on 1 October 2025.
Aylin Yener holds the Roy and Lois Chope Chair in Engineering at The Ohio State University, where she is a professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Integrated Systems Engineering. Her research explores the foundations of next-generation connectivity—known broadly as 6G—focusing on smart environments, artificial intelligence, and secure, sustainable communication systems. She is internationally recognized for pioneering contributions to physical layer security, energy harvesting wireless networks, and semantic communications, areas she helped launch through a series of influential “first” publications.
Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, ARL, and other federal agencies and industry partners. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and an elected member of The Science Academy of Turkey. Her work has earned numerous honors, including the IEEE Information Theory Society Joy Thomas Paper Award (2025), IEEE Communication Theory Technical Achievement Award (2020), and several IEEE best paper and service awards.
Yener has been an active IEEE volunteer for more than 25 years, serving in a wide range of leadership roles across multiple IEEE societies. She was President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2020 and has held senior editorial and conference leadership roles across the Communications, Signal Processing, Information Theory, and Vehicular Technology Societies. Currently, she serves on the IEEE Board of Directors as the elected Director of Division IX (2024–2025), and as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking, a journal dedicated to energy sustainability in networked systems.
We are at a crossroads where integration of technology into humanity is happening at an unprecedented pace. From materials and algorithms to quantum and space systems, our collective expertise will continue to drive emerging technologies. In the next few years, artificial general intelligence will fundamentally change our personal and professional lives – including but not limited to how engineering solutions are obtained, written and evaluated. Societies and Councils will need to usher in this new era by all its operations. I advocate for TAB to raise to the grand challenge of being the global leader in both advancing and fast adopting to these technological advances.
I will work:
to facilitate innovation driven actions towards ensuring global exchange of ideas by our meetings and publications continue to grow;
for our Societies and Councils to join forces to embrace AI-aided advances in our operations; and
for collaboration within TAB and with all IEEE major boards on addressing complex societal interdisciplinary issues that impact humanity.
I advocate for a global organization that brings down barriers in order for members all over the world to contribute and continues to elevate the value proposition of Society membership while advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.
