iOS 18 unveiled at WWDC 2024: Quite a step up, with"Apple Intelligence" and RCS support (finally!)
At WWDC 2024, we saw the announcement of Apple's new iOS 18, which is a great upgrade that they're promising. We saw contours on Apple Maps, and these new "dark theme" icons, similar to the "Accent Colour" found in One UI 4 and newer. New message effects (only on iMessage, obviously) also play a part along with satelite messaging. Quality of life updates have been made to Mail, Safari, Wallet, and Notes, along with a Passwords app. For gamers, there is a new Game Mode for maximum performance, but the big thing we were all promised was RCS messaging support! Finally! After Google taunting them with their mock "iPager" videos, with social media tag #GetTheMessage, we have finally got it! The oldest devices iOS 18 is compatible with are the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. Everything else from these devices up to the iPhone 15 series is compatible. Additionally, watchOS 11, visionOS 2, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18 have been released alongside iOS 18. One major disappointment is the Control Center, which has been revamped but missing one crucial thing- turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These still "disconnect until tomorrow" instead of turning off, which has almost no effect on battery life as your phone will still be searching for signals. Overall, this is a pretty good upgrade from iOS 17 though.Â
