Jim Rains is FOUNDER of the Advanced Value Group
Jim’s experience includes value analysis, value engineering, lean manufacturing, lean engineering, target costing and competitive product tear-down.
For over 35 years, he has facilitated in access of 800 project teams. His education includes a BSIE degree from Kettering University and a Masters in Industrial Management from Central Michigan University. He is a Life Certified Value Specialist® (the highest level of certification in value engineering).
Jim’s value engineering study experience began in 1980, when he was employed by General Motors. During his GM career he led hundreds of study bookteams working on product designs, manufacturing processes and administrative procedures.
In 2000, the Advanced Value Group, LLC was established to consult with businesses and organizations around the globe in value improving methodologies, as noted above. Mr. Rains is Past President and CEO of SAVE International (The Value Society). In 2001 he was awarded the Presidential Citation by the Society of Japanese Value Engineering. In 2002, Jim was elected to the SAVE College of Fellows, one of the highest honors bestowed to individuals by SAVE. In 2013, the Society of Japanese Value Engineering presented Jim with its Distinguished International Award. He is Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the L.D. Miles Value Foundation and is currently on its Executive Committee. He has traveled worldwide on behalf of SAVE International and presented papers in China, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Japan, and Mexico.
Based on his passion for pleasing the customer and managing cost, he is the author of the book, Target Cost Management: The Ladder to Global Survival and Success. This book describes key thought processes and techniques necessary for a business to thrive in the fierce global competitive environment. Jim is a co-author of the book Value Methodology that is now recognized as the SAVE International Body of Knowledge. Jim is also a co-author of the newest book on Function Analysis titled Function Analysis Guide. This book is the official document by SAVE International that will be used to teach all future value engineers and used to prepare exams for professional certification.
