The story focuses on an epic conflict on Pandora, an inhabited Earth-sized moon of Polyphemus, one of three gas giants orbiting Alpha Centauri A. On Pandora, human colonists and the sentient humanoid indigenous inhabitants of Pandora, the Na'vi, engage in a war over the planet's resources (such as unobtanium) and the latter's continued existence. The film's title refers to the remotely controlled, genetically engineered human-Na'vi bodies used by the film's human characters to interact with the natives.[4] The protagonist, Jake Sully, is a paraplegic young man who travels to Pandora from Earth. Assisting the corporate monolith known as the Resources Development Administration (RDA), he is given an avatar which he uses to interact with the story's heroine, Neytiri, as well as her clan known as the Omatikaya.

In the end, we have a film that follows many of the same beats as its predecessor, is overly-reliant on special effects instead of a good script, and has much too much going on at all times to really help establish this as a meaningful sequel that sets up a compelling franchise we want to keep diving into in three (or more?) movies.

Instead, I felt like the avatar. For a few hours, I was in their world. For all of the rich 3D worlds Cameron has clearly made, I'd be curious how I could visit it again. Not just in future films, but in VR headsets to come.

We here at /Film have been writing and thinking about Avatar constantly for months and months, and by this point the hype (partially created by sites like ours) is pretty enormous. Industry observers, and to some degree Cameron himself, have claimed that Avatar will not only transform cinema but also the process of how movies are made. The plot details of the film have been covered elsewhere, so I won't go into them here. My question going into the film was not whether or not Cameron could live up to the impossibly high expectations, but simply whether Cameron could temporarily restore that sense of childlike wonder I once felt at watching his movies years ago.

Avatar is the reason why people occasionally use the word "epic" to describe movies. Cameron has always been skilled at setting up a clear dichotomy between good and evil, and that ability is on display here, encapsulated in the epic battle between the natives and the invaders of Pandora. I just wish that we'd gotten to know everyone a little bit more before they all headed off to war.

Avatar followed paraplegic Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who was given a cloned avatar body to infiltrate the Na'vi people on Pandora on behalf of Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Jake became close to the Na'vi people through Neytiri (Zoe Saldaa) and helped lead them to defeat Quaritch. Sixteen years later, Jake and Neytiri's family were on the run from new forces from Earth, led by Quaritch's avatar in Avatar: The Way of Water. They sought refuge among the water tribe and learned their ways, vastly expanding the franchise lore and hinting at where the next Avatar movies would go.

James Cameron previously teased the introduction of the fire tribe in Avatar 3, which is certainly an interesting development. The fire tribe will represent a more villainous faction of the Na'vi, an exciting new direction needed for the Avatar movies. Oona Chaplin is also confirmed to play the tribe's chief, Varang, and will perhaps serve as a villain to rival Quaritch. Additionally, a script leak from Avatar: The Way of Water's bonus features revealed Spider can breathe Pandora's air and confirmed that Kiri will have a significant role in Avatar 3.

The Tulkun were first introduced in Avatar 2, with Lo'ak befriending the Paykan, an exiled Tulkun. The title for Avatar 4 could also refer to the Paykan, but this is unlikely as the Tulkun have a deep connection to the water tribe. This would track with James Cameron's comments hinting at the Water Tribe's significance throughout the remaining Avatar movies. Producer John Landau also explained that there would be a time jump in Avatar 4 (via Bleeding Cool) and some parts of the movie were already filmed to avoid the young cast aging too quickly. Landau explained:

While the time jump doesn't reveal much about the narrative, those who have read the Avatar 4 script have been blown away. After complaining about studio notes about the first two movies, Cameron told Collider:

Several months ago, James Cameron stated that if The Way of Water bombed at the box office, he was prepared to end his ambitious Avatar franchise after three movies instead of the planned five. The movie's ticket sales, Cameron later explained, would need to be record-breaking if the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios wanted any chance of breaking even.

Based on the Avatar series, it's an open world action-adventure game where you'll get to explore a whole new continent of Pandora. But how does this game build upon what we've already discovered about Pandora and its inhabitants from the movies?

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora throws players into events that happen before and during the first movie for its prologue. We meet a group of Na'vi children who are learning at RDA (Resources Development Administration) facilities under the tutelage of a human scientist using an avatar body. Of course, these native children were brought into TAP (The Ambassador Program) very early in their lives, so they don't remember much about how they were taken from their families and accept the RDA as saviors who could teach them how to be better than the natives outside thanks to their technology and knowledge from Earth. It's also heavily implied their DNA was used by the RDA for the Avatar Program that made the human/Na'vi hybrid bodies possible.

As we've seen in the two Avatar movies released so far, Eywa isn't welcoming to those who hurt her and Pandora's ecosystems. The moon fights back on her own and alongside the Na'vi through various means, and some of the most majestic and fearsome creatures quickly become biological weapons. Unsurprisingly, the RDA actively wanted to harness that power too. After all, humans have been taming the wilderness and numerous animal species ever since the dawn of civilization.

Filmmaker Cameron does little to hide the political nuances in his $230 million hit, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and is on its way to becoming one of the top 10 highest domestic grossing movies of all time.

Starting in 2025, Avatar Studios will release an animated movie to theaters and an animated show on Paramount+ every year. In other words, there will be three movies and three series in the world of Avatar. The first movie is slated to release on October 10th 2025 and will feature an adult version of Aang and his friends. It will serve as the sequel to the Avatar: The Last Airbender series that ran from 2005-2008. It is reported that each movie has a standalone story, hence not a trilogy.

As if it doesn't ignite our nostalgic feelings enough, Paramount is also rumored to release two movies that will highlight the story of Fire Lord Zuko and Earth Kingdom-born Avatar Kyoshi, predecessor of Aang. These two upcoming titles will be separated from the three movies slated to release starting in 2025. So, in total, (hopefully) five movies are currently under development. Fingers crossed!

James Cameron's Avatar doesn't need an introduction. Its name has cemented itself as one of the most successful movies of all time, and recently surpassed 1997's iconic Titanic to become the third highest-grossing movie ever. The film was so successful that it spawned multiple spin-offs, including an Avatar comic, a video game, and a theme park.

The sequel to the first Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of the Water, was quite successful too, grossing over a whopping $2 billion at the box office. More entries in the franchise are already in development that will be released in the coming years, with shorter spans between releases than the 13 years between the first two movies. This hopes to make up for the lack of releases in the past decade, with James Cameron aiming to create an Avatar's own cinematic universe reminiscent of the MCU and the DCEU. 0852c4b9a8
