Human Knot
Players stand in a circle, grab two different people's hands, and work together to untangle themselves without letting go.
Focus: Communication, patience, leadership
Silent Line-Up
Without talking, players must line up in a certain order, such as:
Birthday
Height
Shoe Size
Years Playing Soccer
Alphabetically (first or last name)
Add a time limit to increase difficulty!
Focus: Nonverbal communication
Minefield
Scatter cones or soccer balls around.
One blindfolded (or eyes closed) player navigates through while teammates guide them only with verbal directions.
For safety, walk only.
Focus: Trust and communication
Count to 20
The team tries to count from 1 to 20.
Only one person may say each number.
If two people speak at once, they restart.
Focus: Awareness, patience
Soccer Ball Relay
Use a ball for different challenges:
Dribble around cones
Pass to each teammate
Balance on head
Roll with feet only
Bear crawl while pushing the ball
Focus: Create lots of opportunity for encouragement
Keep it Alive
Teams see how many consecutive touches they can get without the ball hitting the ground.
Variations:
Feet only
Headers only
Everyone must touch the ball
Alternate right/left foot
Focus: Competition & coordination
Cone Capture
Set cones in the middle.
Two teams race to collect one cone at a time.
Players can only carry one cone back.
Most cones wins!
Soccer Tic-Tac-Toe
Create a tic-tac-toe board with cones.
Players dribble to place pinnies (or cones), then return before next teammate goes.
Once all pieces are down, players move pieces instead.
Common Ground
Small groups (4-6) have 3 minutes to discover:
5 things the group has in common
1 thing that is unique about each player
Share with the whole group when time is up
Great for teams with new players (or coaches)!
Would You Rather?
Coach asks "would you rather" questions - team moves from one side to the other. Discuss answers!
Examples:
Beach or mountains?
Early or late practice?
Win 1-0 or 5-4?
Score the winning goal or make the game-saving tackle?
Team bus or parent caravan?
Speed Dating
Players pair up - one minute to answer a prompt.
Examples:
Favorite soccer memory
Dream vacation
Hidden talent
Favorite food
Biggest goal this season
Rotate every minute.
Survival Challenge
Ask: The whole team is stranded on an island. You can only bring five items. Decide together what you're bringing!
Alternatives: Deserted island, zombie apocalypse, camping trip
No right answers - just discussion!
Build the Perfect Captain
Put players in small groups - have groups list the qualities of a great captain.
Discuss & have groups compare lists.
This is a great time to discuss team goals and what next season's captains may look like!
Team Values
On a sticky note (or on their phones), each player writes one word describing the culture they want this season.
(Examples: trust, effort, joy, discipline, family, accountability)
Discuss themes as a group.
Human Obstacle Course
Players work in pairs or groups to create an obstacle course teammates navigate.
Can include:
Bear crawls
Crab walks
Backpedals
Ball dribbling
Circle Passing Challenge
Everyone forms a circle.
Challenge:
Every player must receive a pass before returning to the start.
Time it - try to beat previous time each round.
Extra challenge: add another ball!
Team Plank Challenge
See who can hold a plank for the longest.
While holding:
Answer fun questions
Recite teammates' names
Pass a soccer ball around the circle
Four Corners Strategy
Label corners:
Offense
Defense
Leadership
Teamwork
Coach comes up with various scenarios. Players move to the corner representing the most important factor. Discuss.
Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament
Players challenge one another.
When someone loses, they become that player's biggest fan—following them and cheering until there's one champion.
Name & Movement
Everyone says:
Their name
Favorite player (preferably soccer, but could be another sport)
Favorite goal/scoring celebration
They then perform a movement that everyone has to copy.
The Perfect Team Photo
Groups have 5 minutes to create
Funniest team photo
Most creative soccer pose
Best action scene
Movie poster
Groups then come together to vote on the best photo.
One-Word Story
Players sit in a circle.
Create a story with each player saying only one word at a time.
Bonus if the story must involves soccer!
Roses, Buds, Thorns
Each player shares:
Rose: Something good
Bud: Something they're excited about
Thorn: A challenge
Shout-Out Circle
Go around the circle and give genuine compliments.
"I appreciate ___ because..."
"Someone who encouraged me today was..."
