Parts Churn and China

China is different. China is unique. China doesn’t use Parts Churn in manufacturing – at least not in manufacturing for domestic consumption. China was the home of Bi Sheng. Bi Sheng invented the use of interchangeable parts about 1,000 years ago. Parts Churn manufacturing makes no sense in China whereas, somehow, in the United States it not only seems to make sense but was the only way cars were manufactured after the Model T at least until the arrival of Tesla.

Below are two sets of tables. The first set compares Ford with Chery. Chery is an automobile manufacturer in China established in 1997. Chery does not churn parts. What reason could there be to churn automobile horns?

Ford Horn Summary

Why would Ford churn horns? A new technological breakthrough? Unlikely. Even if there were some sort of miracle technological discovery, why couldn’t the miracle be manufactured in the form of any of the older horns?

Some years ago there was a miracle technological breakthrough in the production of light bulbs; Light Emitting Diodes (LED) were invented using an entirely different technology than incandescent light bulbs. LED light bulbs use about

1/10 the amount of power to produce the same amount of light as the earlier incandescent light bulbs.

Nonetheless, LED light bulbs can be interchangeable with incandescent light bulbs. Very few are the improvements in a component such that the improved component cannot be made to be interchangeable with earlier versions.

Now, compare Chery with Tesla. You will see that they are basically the same. This is what professional engineering looks like. This is what honest engineering looks like. This is what happens when a company serves the customer rather than swindles the customer.
