If you want a specialized wiring harness that integrates deeply with diagnostic codes for older Dodge and Chrysler trucks, choose AUTO OCCASION Trailer Brake Vehicle; if you need a durable, direct-replacement switch for modern GM heavy-duty pickups and SUVs in cold weather, choose SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control.
• AUTO OCCASION: Its standout strength is the comprehensive support for specific OBD-II trouble codes (like P0100 series and crankshaft position sensors) tailored for 1995–2011 Dodge Ram and Chrysler Aspen models, but it is strictly limited to those older vehicle platforms.
• SMTRUILAN: Built from high-quality ABS material designed for wear and corrosion resistance, this unit offers a robust direct replacement for 2007–2014 GM vehicles like the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, making it ideal for harsh winter conditions where durability matters most.
• Who is it for?: AUTO OCCASION fits owners of late-90s and early-2000s domestic trucks needing code integration; SMTRUILAN serves drivers of mid-2000s to early-2010s GM full-size trucks who require a rugged switch that withstands temperature swings.
This component is not a universal trailer brake controller; it is a highly specific connector designed to bridge the gap between the vehicle's internal diagnostics and the trailer braking system on older American muscle and work trucks. The primary value here lies in its ability to handle complex sensor communication. This suggests the product is engineered to prevent the vehicle's computer from throwing error lights when a trailer harness is installed or modified. If your truck's dashboard is prone to flashing check-engine lights simply because you hooked up a trailer, this unit addresses that specific electrical friction point.
The fitment window is narrow but precise. You are looking at vehicles built between 1995 and 2011, specifically targeting the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 lines, along with the Dakota, Durango, and Chrysler Aspen. If your truck falls outside these years or makes, this part will not function correctly, regardless of how much you might wish it did. The design philosophy here is about restoration and compatibility. It relies on visual matching against your existing part and strict adherence to the year/make/model list provided by the manufacturer. It is an engineering solution for legacy vehicles where factory wiring might have been inconsistent or where aftermarket modifications have caused signal conflicts.
You should buy this if you own a Dodge Ram or Chrysler Aspen from the late 90s or 2000s and are struggling with warning lights or brake signal inconsistencies. It is particularly relevant for those who tow frequently in varying conditions and cannot afford to ignore dashboard warnings. However, you must skip this product if you drive a newer model, a Ford, a Toyota, or any vehicle outside the specified 1995–2011 range. There is no flexibility here; the pinout and logic are locked to that specific generation of Stellantis-era hardware.

In contrast to the complex code-handling nature of the AUTO OCCASION unit, the SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control is a straightforward, physical replacement switch designed for the robust GM platform. Its primary appeal is material construction. The product is explicitly described as being made of high-quality ABS material, which is noted for being wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and durable. This specification is not just marketing fluff; it speaks directly to the needs of a truck owner who lives in an area with salted roads, snow, and freezing temperatures. A plastic switch that cracks under thermal stress or corrodes due to road salt is a safety hazard. By prioritizing ABS durability, this unit aims to solve real-world problems like brake failure and persistent warning lights caused by a degraded switch mechanism.
The target audience is exclusively owners of General Motors full-size trucks and SUVs from the 2007 to 2014 era. This includes the Chevy Silverado (1500 through 3500HD), Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, and Cadillac Escalade variants, as well as their GMC counterparts like the Sierra and Yukon. The part replaces specific OEM numbers (15823719 and 15926102), indicating it is a direct drop-in replacement rather than a custom adapter. If your current switch feels loose, sticks in the cabin, or has failed completely, this unit restores the mechanical interface needed to control electric trailer brakes. It is a functional upgrade for vehicles that see heavy use, where the reliability of the control knob or lever is paramount.
This product is ideal for drivers who prioritize longevity and resistance to environmental damage over complex electronic integration. If you are towing a heavy load in winter, the corrosion resistance becomes a critical feature. You can rely on the ABS housing to maintain its structural integrity even when exposed to freezing rain or de-icing chemicals. However, this unit is useless if you drive a non-GM vehicle or a model outside the 2007–2014 window. It does not offer the diagnostic code support seen in the other option; its job is purely to restore the physical connection for the brake control system. If you are comfortable with a simple, durable replacement that fits your specific GM truck perfectly, this is the logical choice.
• Best for Cold Weather Durability → SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control: The explicit mention of corrosion-resistant ABS material makes this the superior choice for freezing climates where salt and moisture degrade standard plastics.
• Best for Diagnostic Code Support → AUTO OCCASION Trailer Brake Vehicle: Only this unit supports the extensive list of P-codes, making it essential for preventing check-engine lights on older Dodge/Chrysler systems.
• Best for Fitment Precision → AUTO OCCASION: Requires visual matching and strict year verification, ensuring a perfect electrical handshake for specific legacy engines.
• Best for Direct Replacement Simplicity → SMTRUILAN: Replaces specific OEM part numbers without needing complex coding adjustments, offering a plug-and-play experience for GM owners.
• Best for Heavy-Duty Towing Reliability → SMTRUILAN: The wear-resistant build quality ensures the switch won't fail after years of rough handling in the cab.
• Best for Older Domestic Trucks → AUTO OCCASION: The only viable option for 1995–2011 Dodge Ram and Chrysler Aspen owners needing brake integration.
• Best for Mid-2000s GM Trucks → SMTRUILAN: Specifically engineered for the 2007–2014 Silverado, Sierra, and Tahoe family.
• Best for Preventing Warning Lights → AUTO OCCASION: Designed to manage the vehicle's ECU response to trailer connections, reducing false alarms on older dashboards.
I would personally choose the SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control for my daily driver, especially given the cold weather requirements we discussed. While the AUTO OCCASION unit solves fascinating electronic puzzles for older Dodges, the SMTRUILAN switch addresses a more fundamental safety concern: the physical durability of the control itself. In freezing temperatures, a switch made of high-quality, corrosion-resistant ABS is less likely to crack or seize than a generic component. For a driver towing in winter, knowing the switch will withstand the elements is more reassuring than managing diagnostic codes, which are often vehicle-specific quirks. I recommend the SMTRUILAN for anyone with a compatible GM truck who values long-term reliability and resistance to harsh weather conditions.
Yes, the product description highlights that it is made of high-quality ABS material specifically noted for being corrosion-resistant and durable, which helps it withstand harsh winter environments.
No, the compatibility data clearly limits this part to models manufactured between 1995 and 2011; it will not fit or function correctly on a 2015 vehicle.
The provided data sheet does not list warranty information or customer service details, so you should verify coverage directly with the seller before purchasing.
This unit is designed to replace specific OEM part numbers (15823719 and 15926102) for 2007–2014 GM vehicles; using it on a different make or model may result in incompatibility.
