If you want professional studio monitoring and passive isolation for loud library environments, choose Austrian Audio; if you need ultra-portable Hi-Fi detail and planar magnetic clarity for quiet study sessions, choose Letshuoer S12.
• Austrian Audio (Hi-X60): Delivers industry-leading passive noise isolation and comfort for long wear, but requires a wired connection and is heavy for casual use. Best for students or professionals who need to block out distractions in busy spaces.
• Letshuoer S12: Offers incredible high-frequency detail with a lightweight planar driver design, but lacks active isolation and relies on a secure seal. Best for audiophiles who prioritize soundstage and portability over environmental blocking.
The Austrian Audio Hi-X60 is built as a professional reference tool first and foremost. Its closed-back design is engineered specifically for environments where sound leakage is a problem or where external noise must be kept at bay. In a library setting, this means the ear cups create a physical barrier that prevents your music from disturbing others while simultaneously using passive noise suppression to keep you focused on your work. The 44mm High Excursion drivers with their ring magnet system are tuned for linear frequency response, meaning you hear exactly what is in the mix without artificial coloration. This makes them ideal for anyone doing audio editing, critical listening, or simply needing absolute concentration without the chaos of a bustling reading room.
Comfort is a major pillar of the Hi-X60's design philosophy. With soft memory foam earpads and an open ventilation structure, these headphones are meant to stay on your head for hours without causing fatigue. The headband features a smart cut-out to relieve pressure on the top of the head, which is crucial when you are settling in for a long afternoon of studying or working. The metal hinges and bow add a layer of durability that suggests these will last through years of daily commuting and campus life. If your primary concern is stability and keeping the world outside at arm's length, this over-ear design is unmatched.

However, the trade-off is weight and connectivity. At 2.2 pounds, the unit is substantial compared to smaller in-ear options. You are also locked into a wired experience via the included 3.5mm jack, with no Bluetooth capability. This means you cannot easily pair with a phone while walking across campus unless you carry a DAC adapter, and you must manage the cable. But for those who value pure, uncolored sound quality and total silence, the weight is a small price to pay for the engineering precision found inside. These are not just headphones; they are a workstation for your ears.
The Letshuoer S12 Ultra takes a different approach entirely, focusing on the intimate and detailed experience of in-ear monitoring. By utilizing a 14.8mm planar magnetic driver, it pushes high-frequency extension and detail retrieval far beyond what typical dynamic drivers offer. The sound signature is described as richly layered and perfectly balanced, with highs that unfold with natural clarity. For a student or reader who wants to immerse themselves in a book or a podcast without feeling isolated from their immediate surroundings, the compact form factor allows you to move freely. The Mocha-colored housing is designed with a cohesive aesthetic, making it a stylish accessory that doesn't draw attention.
Portability is where the S12 shines. Unlike the bulky over-ear cans, these fit directly into your ear canal, offering a solution that is almost invisible. The package includes a 392-core silver-plated copper cable that ensures low-loss signal transmission, revealing micro-details that might get lost in lesser earphones. The inclusion of both 3.5mm and 4.4mm connectors adds versatility, allowing you to plug directly into various source gear. Perhaps most notably, the kit comes with a DT01 Pro 3.5mm to Type-C DAC amplifier cable, which removes the barrier of connecting to modern mobile devices that lack a headphone jack. This makes it incredibly convenient for on-the-go listening without carrying extra adapters.
The main compromise here is the lack of active or passive noise cancellation inherent in the design. While the in-ear shape provides some isolation by sealing the canal, it does not offer the same level of sound-blocking as the closed-back over-ear design of the Austrian Audio. In a very noisy library, you might find yourself turning up the volume to compensate. Furthermore, the planar magnetic technology requires a clean signal path to perform its best, meaning the quality of your source device matters significantly. If you are looking for a lightweight, high-fidelity option that prioritizes sonic purity over environmental shielding, the S12 is a compelling choice.

For a library environment, I would personally choose the Austrian Audio Hi-X60. The ability to passively isolate yourself from the ambient noise of a shared space is invaluable when you need deep focus. The closed-back design ensures that my music stays mine and the library stays quiet for everyone else. If you are serious about creating a personal sanctuary within a public space, the over-ear design wins.
