On January 8, 2026, two individuals—a man and a woman—were shot and wounded during an encounter with U.S. federal agents in Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred in the city’s Hazelwood neighborhood in the early afternoon, and both people were taken to local hospitals; their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Portland police received calls shortly after 2:15 p.m. local time reporting a shooting. Responding officers later located the two victims several blocks from the initial stop and provided emergency aid before paramedics transported them. Police confirmed the injuries were sustained in a shooting involving federal agents, but said local officers were not involved and do not handle immigration enforcement.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation because the incident involved a federal agent. Local authorities said they could not yet confirm the identities of the wounded or details about the operation.
Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the agents involved were from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and that the shooting occurred during a targeted vehicle stop. DHS said the agent fired after the driver allegedly attempted to use the vehicle against agents. These claims have not been independently verified by local authorities.
The shooting occurred one day after a separate fatal encounter between a federal immigration officer and a civilian in Minneapolis. Following the Portland incident, local leaders called for further investigation, transparency, and a pause in immigration enforcement operations. The Oregon Attorney General’s office also announced it would open its own review to assess whether any federal officer acted outside legal authority.
Public reactions followed, with demonstrators and officials urging federal immigration authorities to halt operations in the city.
