How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want customisable sound and a wired fallback for lag-free video, choose August Over Ear; if you need marathon battery life and a foldable travel-first design, choose Wentronic Y05.
• August Over Ear — biggest strength: The free August Audio EQ app lets you reshape the sound yourself, and aptX Low Latency keeps audio locked to video when you're watching or gaming.
• August Over Ear — biggest trade-off: Roughly 10 hours of playback per charge and a 2-hour charge time mean it's a daily-charge kind of headphone.
• Wentronic Y05 — biggest strength: Up to 48 hours of playback from one charge, plus Bluetooth 5.3 with a claimed range up to 50 feet.
• Wentronic Y05 — biggest trade-off: No EQ app and no low-latency codec mentioned — you get the tuning the 40mm drivers ship with.
• Pick August Over Ear if you split your time between music, calls and streaming video and like to tweak how things sound.
• Pick Wentronic Y05 if you travel a lot, hate charging, and want a foldable pair that stows in its included hard case.
The August EP650 is built around control. Its 50mm dynamic drivers handle the low end, and the free August Audio EQ app — Android and iOS — is the real differentiator here. Instead of accepting one factory tuning, you can push the bass, flatten it out, or brighten the highs. That's rare in this category and genuinely useful if your taste shifts between podcasts, hip-hop and acoustic stuff.
Connectivity is where it earns its keep for mixed use. aptX Low Latency is the headline: it keeps sound and picture aligned over Bluetooth, which matters if you watch TV, YouTube or play games and hate that half-second lip-sync drift. You also get multipoint, so it can hold a phone and a computer at once and pause the music when a call comes in. Bluetooth v5.1 with NFC pairing, a 10-metre range, and — importantly — a 3.5mm jack for a fully wired session when you want zero latency or a dead battery.
Buy it if you want to shape your own sound, need low-latency video sync, or want a wired option as a safety net. Skip it if you can't be bothered charging every couple of days — 10 hours per charge is the weak spot.
Wentronic Y05: Who It's For
The Wentronic Y05 plays a different game: endurance and portability. It quotes up to 48 hours of playback, which changes how you live with a headphone — you can take a week-long trip and not think about the charger. Bluetooth 5.3 with anti-interference tech and a range up to 50 feet (15 metres) keeps the connection stable in busy wireless environments, and the 40mm drivers cover a 20Hz–20kHz range for music, movies and calls.
Comfort gets real attention in the design. Memory-protein ear cushions and an adjustable headband spread pressure evenly, the materials are breathable to reduce heat build-up, and the rotating earcups conform to your head — with the padded headband specifically accommodating glasses wearers. That's a detail most listings skip, and it matters if you wear specs all day.
The travel side is the clincher. It's foldable with a collapsible hinge, so it drops into a bag or the included hard case, and a slider headband adjusts for a secure fit across head sizes. Build is reinforced hinges and plastic; you also get a 3.5mm jack for wired listening, button controls with sound isolation, and a 1-year warranty. It weighs 0.33kg and comes in purple.
Buy it if battery life and packability top your list. Skip it if you want to fine-tune the tuning or need a low-latency codec for competitive gaming — neither is in the spec sheet.

• Best for larger drivers → August Over Ear. 50mm against the Y05's 40mm.
In my opinion, the August Over Ear is the one I'd buy — but only if your use is varied. The EQ app and aptX Low Latency are things you feel every single day: you tune the sound to your taste and you stop noticing lip-sync. In my opinion it's the more flexible headphone for someone who works, watches and listens on the same pair.
If your life is planes, trains and long days away from a charger, I'd point you to the Wentronic Y05 instead. That 48-hour figure and the foldable hard-case design win on the road, and no EQ app can make up for a dead battery. Check the current price on Amazon for both before you commit, since that's the one factor the specs can't tell you.
FAQ
They're tuned differently rather than one being objectively better. The August uses larger 50mm drivers and adds an EQ app so you can adjust the sound; the Y05 uses 40mm drivers with a fixed tuning. Pick based on whether you want to customise.
The August Over Ear. Its aptX Low Latency support is designed to keep audio and video in sync, which the Wentronic Y05's spec sheet doesn't mention. The August also supports multipoint for switching between devices.
Yes. Both the August Over Ear and the Wentronic Y05 include a 3.5mm jack, so you can run them wired when the battery is low or when you want zero wireless latency.
