ANNUAL HAUNTED HOUSE
The theme for my freshman year was American Horror Story and my character lived in the series Asylum. I helped set up and envision the set pieces and worked on character design for my character.
The theme for my sophomore year was Phobias and my character lived in the circus room. I helped decorate the dressing rooms as well as the hallway, developing a "fun house" complete with a ball pit, tiny doors, and clowns.
The theme for my junior year was Haunted Hotel and my character was a butler wandering throughout the hallways. I helped construct multiple rooms (the stage depicting the Hotel's laundry room and bedroom, and the hallway- created as the Hotel's elevator that was out of commission), complete with two different paths, helping with traffic flow from students.
BIOGRAPHY
I am currently 17 years old and I have been a theatre student at South Mountain High School for the past four years. I remember touring high schools after middle school, when I walked into South Mountain High School's green room where the Advanced Theatre Class was rehearsing their Senior One Acts. I could feel the magic in that room, with actors twirling, shouting, and even wearing giant M and M costumes around the room. While I have been in theatre since fourth grade, with my first musical being 101 Dalmatians (I was a boxer puppy), I have definitely grown as an actress and learned so much from my time at South. I have not only learned how to empathize with the characters I play, but I have also learned how to work with others, how to write a play, how to set design haunted houses, how to perform Shakespeare, how to improvise (the key is to never say NO!), and so much more. I am eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to have worked with so many incredible theatre students and teachers (Ms. St John, Ms. Lyons, and Ms. Cortes). I will never forget the sound of my heart beating amongst the silence of the audience and the tension of the curtains just about to open; it makes me feel invincible. And as a senior this year, amongst COVID-19, I explored the realm of directing, something I find quite terrifying yet fascinating at the same time. I have learned how to lead, trust my decisions, and work with actors on their strengths and weaknesses. And as cheesy as it sounds, while I have done my share of mentoring and teaching in theatre, I cannot begin to express how much I have learned and have grown as an individual as a result of acting and rehearsing with my fellow peers. As much as I will miss South Mountain High School's theatre department, I hope to leave behind a legacy of commitment and passion. I give my all to every single performance that I partake in and I hope that I have inspired some young kid out in the audience, who for the first time sees themselves as an actor, to go for it. While I will be majoring in microbiology in college, I am definitely looking forward to joining some theatre clubs as well as taking a few drama courses in the future.
While this is my final curtain call for South Mountain High School theatre, I can never forget the incredible people I have met and the amazing characters I have had the opportunity of embodying along the way. *Curtain closes*
