There's been some talk lately about Audible and how little they pay authors, and sometimes people will ask for different options, even the direct option. I've recommended a few retailers in these kinds of threads that have better terms, like Chirp, Audiobooks.com, Kobo, among others.

I'm actually one of these authors. I'm really trying to focus on direct audiobook sales, mainly because Audible pays us so little. If you're non-exclusive like me, you get about 15% of each sale. Selling direct I can keep 100% minus some minor transaction fees. So basically one sale direct is like six sales on Audible (assuming the same price).

I know I can never beat Audible as far as convenience, so I won't even try. I'm just trying to figure out what people's sticking points are when buying direct from authors, and how I can make the process as seamless as possible.

As you can see, there are a lot of hurdles to authors taking power into their own hands. It's hard to communicate to the reader, especially readers who have never heard of you before. Every little thing you ask a reader to do that's different/takes time, adds friction to the process and makes a direct sale less likely to happen, especially when Audible offers instant convenience.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing is launching a beta program in the United States to take most of the financial burden off audiobook production. Authors can create an audiobook version of their ebook using virtual voice narration and synthetic speech technology. Amazon is promising to grow the beta in the future as they iron out any bugs and open the platform up to other countries.

Authors will first choose one of their eligible ebooks on Kindle Direct Publishing to publish an audiobook. Authors can then sample voices, preview, and customize the audiobook. Authors can set a list price between $3.99 and $14.99 and will receive a 40% royalty. After publication, audiobooks will be live within 72 hours and distributed where Audible titles are sold. This will save authors thousands of dollars who would generally hire professional narrators, voice talent and engineers to do the final edits through ACX.

For audiobook reviews, check out AudioFile, a website that focuses only on audiobooks. Originally founded in 1992 as a consumer magazine, it is chock-full of reviews, articles, and blog posts on audiobooks of all genres, and for all ages.

The site writes about different audiobook narrators, and includes samples of their voices and their work. Great narrators are recognized with the "Golden Voice" award, and audiobooks that have received rave reviews are given the site's "Earphones Award". Looking for your next book? If you refer to the ebook or audiobook version of a reference, cite the print book unless there is something distinctive about the ebook or audiobook that you are referring to (such as referring to the reader's voice in an audiobook). Many eBooks have page numbers that correlate with their print alternatives. If an eBook has page numbers, provide those page numbers in your in-text citation after a direct quote as you would for a print book. However when you sell direct, you can get paid your royalties instantly, or nearly so. This means that as you are advertising your books, if they are profitable, you can instantly scale your ads to hundreds or even thousands of dollars, because you will be making that money back immediately.

Selling direct is a wonderful opportunity for marketing-minded authors. There are plenty of opportunities for A/B testing, trying different headlines and tweaking the copywriting, tweaking sales pages, and many other selling strategies that you can't do as well on Amazon (because you don't have a way of recording the data). e24fc04721
