If you want lightweight, portable comfort for on-the-go listening with Bluetooth connectivity, choose Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M; if you need sealed studio-grade monitoring with deep bass response and wired precision for a MacBook, choose Superlux HD661.
• Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M: The standout strength is its featherweight 20-gram design that eliminates ear strain during long sessions, but the trade-off is a limited frequency ceiling of 16kHz compared to true hi-res standards. This pick is for travelers and casual listeners who prioritize portability and wireless freedom.
• Superlux HD661: The clear winner here is the robust 40mm neodymium driver delivering a massive 10Hz to 20kHz range in a sealed enclosure, though the weight and lack of wireless features make it less ideal for commuting. This choice fits audio engineers and desktop users who demand accuracy over convenience.
The Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M is engineered around the concept of minimal intrusion. At just 0.7 ounces (20 grams), it represents one of the lightest options available for an on-ear device. The housing is ultra-thin, which directly translates to a fit that feels almost non-existent after wearing them for hours. If your primary use case involves moving around—commuting, working in a coffee shop, or simply walking through your home—the lack of physical bulk is a game-changer. The plastic construction keeps the mass down without feeling flimsy, and the flat earpiece shape ensures they sit flush against the ear rather than pressing into the cartilage.
Connectivity is where this model truly shines for the modern user. It supports Bluetooth 5.0, offering a wireless experience that removes cable clutter entirely. While it retains a 3.5mm jack for wired connections when battery life dips or latency becomes a concern, the inclusion of built-in media controls and a remote controller means you can manage playback without reaching for your phone. The passive noise cancellation provided by the on-ear seal is sufficient for dampening ambient chatter, making it a solid candidate for the best comfortable headphone for macbook users who also value mobility.

However, you should skip this model if your workflow demands absolute fidelity across the entire audible spectrum. The frequency response tops out at 16,000 Hz, meaning you will miss some of the airy highs found in higher-resolution audio files. The 28-millimeter dynamic drivers are tuned for clarity and reduced strain rather than deep, rumbling bass or expansive soundstage. If you are looking for the best hi res headphones for macbook setups where every hertz matters, the technical limitations here might leave you wanting more detail in the treble range. It is a fantastic daily driver, but not a reference monitor.
The Superlux HD661 is built from the ground up for the studio environment, prioritizing acoustic isolation and sonic accuracy above all else. The sealed enclosure is a critical feature here; unlike open-back designs that leak sound, this headphone creates an airtight seal that allows for use in noisy environments without external interference. This makes it exceptionally effective for live monitoring, broadcast applications, or recording sessions where you need to hear exactly what is being captured without bleed. The neoprene material used in the enclosure adds a layer of durability and a specific tactile feel that differs significantly from the plastic construction of consumer models.
Performance-wise, the specifications tell a story of power and depth. The 40mm dynamic type driver with a neodymium magnet is significantly larger than the unit in the Audio Technica, allowing for a much broader frequency band ranging from 10 Hz to 20,000 Hz. That extra low-end extension down to 10 Hz provides a sense of weight and presence that is crucial for mixing music or checking sound effects. With a sensitivity of 102 dB SPL and an impedance of 68 Ohms, these headphones are designed to be driven effectively by standard audio interfaces and DACs often found on a MacBook Pro or desktop setup. They offer balanced tones that give engineers confidence in their recordings.
The trade-off for this performance is form factor and connectivity. Weighing in at 6.72 ounces, this is nearly thirty-five times heavier than the Audio Technica option. You will definitely feel the clamping force and weight after several hours of wear, which limits its suitability for travel. Furthermore, there is no Bluetooth; this is strictly a wired experience. The package includes two cables—a 3.3-foot (1 m) short cord and a 9.8-foot (3 m) long cord—along with a gold-plated conversion plug from 3.5mm to 6.3mm. If you are looking for wireless headphones for macbook workflows where cable management is a headache, this sealed design will feel restrictive. However, for stationary work, the included accessories ensure you have the right connection for any audio interface.

I would buy the Superlux HD661 if my primary goal was to get the best hi res headphones for macbook production work. The sealed design and extended frequency response provide a level of accuracy and control that the Audio Technica simply cannot match. While the weight is a significant drawback for travel, the 40mm drivers and 10Hz low-end deliver a listening experience that feels substantial and professional. I recommend this for anyone serious about sound quality who spends most of their time at a desk. However, if your priority is finding the best comfortable headphone for macbook users who need to move freely, the Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M remains the superior choice for its wireless ease and weightless feel.
Only the Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M supports Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless streaming. The Superlux HD661 requires a wired connection via the included 3.5mm cable.
The Superlux HD661 extends up to 20,000 Hz, capturing more air and detail in the treble range compared to the Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M, which tops out at 16,000 Hz.
Neither model features active electronic noise cancellation. The Audio Technica uses passive sealing, while the Superlux relies on its sealed neoprene enclosure for isolation.
The Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M weighs only 20g due to its ultra-thin plastic housing, making it incredibly light for travel but potentially less robust than the heavier, neoprene-clad Superlux HD661.
