If you want a wired, audiophile-grade listening experience with balanced connection options and superior high-frequency clarity, choose Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK; if you need active noise cancellation, wireless freedom with multi-day battery life, and a feature-rich experience for commuting, choose Edifier ES850NB.
• Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK: Offers Hi-Res audio fidelity with a balanced output jack and 45mm drivers, but lacks wireless connectivity or active noise cancellation, making it best for stationary critical listening.
• Edifier ES850NB: Delivers hybrid active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, and an incredible 92-hour battery life, but is heavier and relies on digital processing that some purists might find less natural than analog wiring.
• The Verdict: The Audio-Technica model is the pick for home studio work or pure music appreciation in quiet spaces, while the Edifier headphones are the superior choice for ear clip headphones for commuting, travel, and office environments where isolation matters.
The Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK is built for listeners who prioritize raw audio quality above all else. This is not a gadget-heavy headphone; it is a focused tool designed to reproduce sound with minimal coloration. At its core lies the proprietary 45 mm True Motion Driver, which features diamond-like carbon coated diaphragms. This specific construction allows the unit to handle Hi-Res Audio reproduction with a level of detail that standard dynamic drivers often miss. The design includes Multi-layer Air Damping Technology, a system combining layered housing and a triple-vent mechanism. This isn't just marketing fluff; it physically reduces unwanted vibration and controls airflow inside the ear cup, resulting in superior audio clarity.
For the audiophile who listens to high-resolution files or wants to hear the nuances in their favorite tracks, this model delivers. The inclusion of a stainless steel acoustic mesh resistor specifically improves high-frequency response, while a bass acoustic resistor ensures accurate low-frequency performance. If you have a dedicated listening setup at home or in a quiet office and prefer to plug directly into a source via the included 3.5 mm jack, this is your match. The fact that it supports a balanced connection option (a renewal of the award-winning MSR7 lineage) speaks to its serious intent. You get a frequency response range from 15 Hz to 20 KHz, covering the full spectrum of human hearing with precision.

However, this product has distinct trade-offs that define who should skip it. First, it is strictly wired. While it offers a Y-type cable, there is no Bluetooth module, meaning you cannot use these as neckband headphones for commuting or while moving around a gym. Second, the noise control method is purely passive sound isolation. There is no active noise cancellation (ANC) circuitry to block out the roar of a train engine or a busy coffee shop. If you rely on electronics to silence the world, this over-ear headphone will feel lacking in those scenarios. Finally, at 163 grams, it is lighter than many competitors, but without ANC or wireless features, the value proposition shifts entirely toward sonic purity rather than convenience.
The Edifier ES850NB is engineered for the modern commuter and the busy professional who needs versatility. Its primary strength lies in its ability to isolate sound digitally. It utilizes an upgraded Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation system capable of blocking up to -45dB of ambient noise. This is not a single setting; you can toggle between high, medium, wind reduction, and ambient sound modes. This flexibility makes it ideal for changing environments, whether you are walking through a windy street, sitting on a noisy bus, or trying to focus in a bustling open-plan office. The inclusion of touch controls and app support means you can adjust these settings without reaching for your phone constantly.
Battery life is the other defining feature here. With a capacity to deliver up to 92 hours of playback with ANC off and 53 hours with it on, this device eliminates the anxiety of running out of power during long trips. A 15-minute fast charge provides 11.5 hours of playback, which is perfect for those "rush hour" mornings when you forget to charge overnight. The hardware supports Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring a stable wireless connection for streaming Hi-Res Audio Wireless certified content. The 40mm titanium-coated drivers, paired with LDAC and SBC support, allow for rich, detailed sound that adapts to different genres via selectable sound effects like Music, Game, or Spatial audio.
Comfort is also a major consideration for this model, especially given its intended use case. Weighing in at 260 grams, it is heavier than the Audio-Technica option, yet it manages to remain comfortable for all-day wear thanks to skin-friendly leather ear cushions and an ergonomic steel headband. The fully foldable design makes it practical for travel, fitting easily into a bag. However, the reliance on wireless technology and active components means it requires charging and introduces a layer of digital signal processing that changes the character of the sound compared to a direct wired connection. It is the ultimate solution for ear clip headphones for commuting, offering a complete package of isolation, connectivity, and endurance that wired-only models simply cannot match.
• Best for Battery Life → Edifier ES850NB: With 92 hours of playtime, it far outlasts any wired competitor.
• Best for Audiophile Fidelity → Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK: The 45mm DLC drivers and balanced jack offer a purer analog signal path.
• Best for Commuting → Edifier ES850NB: Active noise cancellation and wireless freedom make it essential for travel.
• Best for Quiet Home Listening → Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK: No battery drain, no compression, just direct connection to your audio source.
• Best for Connectivity Options → Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK: Includes a balanced connection option for high-end DACs, whereas Edifier is Bluetooth only.
• Best for Active Noise Reduction → Edifier ES850NB: Blocks up to -45dB of noise with multiple modes, unlike the passive isolation of the Audio-Technica.
• Best for Portability → Edifier ES850NB: Fully foldable design and wireless nature suit travel better than the rigid wired setup of the Audio-Technica.
• Best for Value → Edifier ES850NB: Offers wireless, ANC, and massive battery life in one package, though you must check the current price on Amazon to see the deal.
In my opinion, I would buy the Edifier ES850NB for my daily life. The reality of modern living, especially for anyone using ear clip headphones for commuting, demands more than just good sound; it requires the ability to disconnect from the chaos around you. The 92-hour battery life alone removes the friction of constant charging, and the active noise cancellation transforms the commute from a noisy ordeal into a personal sanctuary. While the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK is undeniably a masterpiece of engineering for the home listener, the Edifier ES850NB is the versatile companion that handles real-world variables like wind, traffic, and transit delays. If your priority is getting from point A to point B with your music intact and the world muted, the Edifier is the clear winner.
Yes, the Edifier ES850NB is excellent for flights due to its 92-hour battery life and hybrid active noise cancellation that blocks engine drone. The Audio-Technica model lacks active cancellation and requires a wired connection, which can be cumbersome on planes without compatible ports.
While the 36 ohm impedance is manageable for most portable players, the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK benefits significantly from a dedicated amplifier or DAC to drive the balanced connection and reveal the full potential of its 45mm drivers. The Edifier ES850NB works well with standard smartphones via Bluetooth.
Both models feature over-ear designs, but the Edifier ES850NB uses a steel headband and leather cushions rated for 260g of weight, which distributes pressure well for long sessions. The Audio-Technica is lighter at 163g but relies on clamping force for passive isolation, which some users might find tighter over long periods.
The Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK likely offers a more natural presentation for complex genres like jazz and classical because of its direct wired connection and specialized acoustic resistors that minimize distortion. The Edifier ES850NB is capable, but the digital processing and compression inherent in wireless transmission may alter the subtle dynamics of acoustic instruments.
