If you want deep, isolated bass and a wired connection for critical listening at home, choose Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200; if you need all-day battery life, wireless freedom, and smart connectivity for your commute, choose Sony WH-CH520.
• Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200: Delivers rich, contoured bass with a long 3-meter cable and robust build, but lacks wireless features or modern app customization. Best for audiophiles who prioritize sound isolation and a stable, wired connection over portability.
• Sony WH-CH520: Offers incredible 50-hour battery life, multipoint Bluetooth pairing, and a lightweight design with voice assistant support, but sacrifices the physical isolation and deep low-end punch of closed-back dynamic drivers. Best for users who value convenience and seamless device switching above pure audio fidelity.
The Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 is built for a specific type of listener: someone who wants to feel the music without distraction. This model is an excellent example of foldable on ear headphones for audiophiles who prefer a traditional, analog experience. The design centers on a large headband paired with an adjustable support system that ensures a secure fit even during extended sessions. If you are a student, a home theater enthusiast, or a musician monitoring tracks in a quiet room, the heavy-duty construction here provides a sense of stability that many wireless counterparts simply cannot match.
The core of its appeal lies in the driver technology. Equipped with newly designed 40 mm drivers, this unit reproduces clear mid and low frequencies that many compact wireless models struggle to reach. The frequency response spans from 20 Hz up to 22,000 Hz, ensuring you hear the full spectrum of a recording. What truly sets it apart for serious listeners are the contoured, isolating earpads. These pads fit naturally over the ears to help provide rich bass while physically blocking out ambient noise through passive sound isolation. You do not need a smartphone app to tweak the EQ; the hardware itself is tuned to deliver powerful, well-balanced audio right out of the box.

However, this product is not for everyone. The reliance on a wired connection means you are tethered to your source via a 3.0 meter (9.8 feet) Y-type cable. While this length gives you plenty of room to stretch out around a desk or living room, it eliminates the freedom of movement found in true wireless setups. Furthermore, the lack of active noise cancellation or digital processing means the experience relies entirely on the physical seal of the earpads and the quality of the source file. If you travel frequently and need to switch between a laptop and a phone instantly, or if you require hands-free calling without holding your device, this wired solution will feel restrictive. It is a tool for focused listening, not for multitasking on the go.
The Sony WH-CH520 targets the modern, mobile user who demands flexibility without sacrificing comfort. As wireless headphones for audiophiles who live their lives on the move, these units excel in scenarios where a cable would be a hindrance. The design philosophy here is strictly about lightweight efficiency. The headphones feature soft earpads, an additional head cushion, and silent joints, making them comfortable enough to wear all day long without fatigue. Whether you are commuting on a train, working in a busy coffee shop, or sitting through a long flight, the ergonomic build ensures they stay put without pressing too hard against your skull.
Battery life is the standout feature that defines this product's utility. With an average life of 50 hours, these headphones can last for days of continuous use before needing a charge. The USB Type-C quick charging capability is equally impressive, delivering up to 90 minutes of playback from just a 3-minute charge. This makes them ideal for multi-day road trips or festival weekends where access to power outlets is unpredictable. Beyond the battery, the integration of Bluetooth 5.0 allows for a stable connection within a 10-meter range, supporting features like Multipoint Connection. This lets you pair two devices simultaneously, so you can switch seamlessly from a video on your laptop to a call on your cellphone without fumbling with settings.
Despite these conveniences, there are trade-offs you must accept. The WH-CH520 is an on-ear model, which generally offers less physical isolation than over-ear designs. Without active noise cancellation, external sounds will bleed in more easily, especially in loud environments. Additionally, while the Sony Headphones Connect App allows you to customize sound preferences using presets or create your own EQ curves, the raw audio output may not match the deep, natural bass response of a dedicated wired driver like the one found in the Audio-Technica. If your priority is absolute sonic purity or deep sub-bass rumble for movie soundtracks, the digital enhancement might feel slightly processed compared to the direct signal path of a wired set. It is a fantastic companion for daily life, but it prioritizes versatility over high-fidelity immersion.
• Best for battery longevity → Sony WH-CH520: With 50 hours of playtime and rapid charging, no wired competitor comes close to this level of endurance.
• Best for sound isolation → Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200: The closed-back design and contoured earpads provide superior passive noise blocking for quiet focus.
• Best for deep bass response → Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200: The 40 mm dynamic drivers are tuned specifically for powerful, well-balanced low frequencies without digital interference.
• Best for multitasking → Sony WH-CH520: Multipoint Bluetooth connection allows instant switching between two devices, a feature impossible on the wired model.
• Best for travel portability → Sony WH-CH520: The swivel design and included hard case make it compact and easy to carry, whereas the ATH-AVC200 relies on a long cable that can tangle.
• Best for home studio or desktop use → Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200: The 3.0 m cable and 6.3 mm adapter make it perfect for connecting directly to mixers, amplifiers, or consoles without latency.
• Best for hands-free calling → Sony WH-CH520: Built-in microphone and voice assistant support allow for calls and commands without touching your phone.
• Best for durability and build → Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200: The robust plastic enclosure and metal-plated connectors suggest a long lifespan for stationary use.
I would buy the Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 if I were primarily looking for a dedicated listening experience at home or in a quiet office. For audiophiles who value the integrity of the sound and the tactile security of a wired connection, this model delivers a richer, more immersive experience that wireless compression often dilutes. The ability to plug into any audio component with the included adapter makes it incredibly versatile for a stationary setup. However, if my daily routine involves constant movement, frequent calls, and a need to never worry about charging, I would switch to the Sony WH-CH520. Its 50-hour battery and smart features make it the superior choice for a lifestyle that refuses to be tethered by cables. Ultimately, the decision rests on whether you value the depth of the sound (ATH-AVC200) or the freedom of the connection (WH-CH520).
Both options offer distinct advantages; the Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 provides superior passive isolation and wired fidelity, while the Sony WH-CH520 offers advanced wireless features and long battery life for the mobile listener.
No, the Sony WH-CH520 does not feature active noise cancellation; it relies on the physical fit of the on-ear design and passive sound isolation to reduce ambient noise.
Yes, the headphones come with a 3.5 mm jack and a 6.3 mm adapter, allowing you to connect them to most portable audio components, though you will need an appropriate dongle if your phone lacks a headphone jack.
The Sony WH-CH520 is designed to be lightweight with soft earpads and silent joints, making it more comfortable for all-day wear compared to the heavier, more substantial build of the Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200.
