If you want a lightweight, precision-engineered solution specifically for your 3.0T Audi B9 chassis and prioritize exact OEM fitment without extra hardware, choose Audi Genuine B9; if you need a heavy-duty filtration system with a complete gasket kit designed for the rugged demands of off-roading across a wide range of Subaru models, choose Subaru Engine Oil Filter.
• Who each pick is for: The Audi part is for the dedicated B9 owner who values minimal weight and exact factory geometry, while the Subaru unit is for the versatile driver tackling dirt roads and gravel who needs a complete sealing kit in one box.
This component is a masterclass in specificity. Designed explicitly for the Audi B9 S4, S5, and SQ5 platforms equipped with the 3.0T engine, this filter is not a generic replacement; it is a "Genuine" part manufactured to meet the exact specifications for fit, form, and function required by that particular powertrain. In the world of high-performance European engineering, where every gram counts toward suspension dynamics and rotational mass, this lightweight design is not an accident—it is a feature.
You should buy this if you own a B9 generation vehicle and are looking for the most direct restoration of your car's original mechanical integrity. The part number 06M198405F is the definitive match for your engine bay, ensuring that the flow rate and micron filtration level align perfectly with what the manufacturer engineered into your oil pump and gallery system. It is the ideal choice for a track-day enthusiast or a highway cruiser who wants their engine to run exactly as it did when it left the assembly line, with zero compromise on the sealing interface provided the correct washer is sourced separately.
However, you should skip this option if you are working on a vehicle outside the specified B9 lineup or if you prefer a "grab-and-go" maintenance experience where every component is included in the box. Because this listing is strictly for the filter element itself, you will need to source the appropriate crush washer from your local dealer or parts bin before installation. If you value a minimalist approach to your garage inventory and already have the necessary washers, this is a premium, precise tool. If you need everything in one package to avoid trips to the store, this standalone unit might feel incomplete compared to more comprehensive kits.

The Subaru offering takes a different approach, focusing on durability and completeness. This filter is engineered to remove millions of microscopic pollutants and dust particles, a crucial capability given the brand's reputation for reliability in harsh environments. The packaging includes the filter alongside a genuine crush washer (Part Number 803916010), creating a sealed system ready for immediate installation.
This product is the clear winner for owners of the Outback, Legacy, Impreza, Forester, XV Crosstrek, and Ascent models listed in the compatibility chart. Whether you drive a 2012 Non-Turbo Impreza or a 2026 Ascent, this filter has been superseded to replace older part numbers like 15208AA160 and 15208AA15A, ensuring backward compatibility across over a decade of production. The inclusion of the crush washer eliminates the risk of using a reused or incorrect seal, which is a common point of failure during DIY oil changes. It is a comprehensive solution that acknowledges the reality of maintenance: you need the filter, and you need the seal, delivered together.
You should definitely consider this if you frequently drive on unpaved surfaces or in dusty conditions where particle filtration is paramount. The recommendation to change oil and filters every 7,500 miles depending on conditions speaks to its role in maintaining engine health under stress. If you are looking for a lightweight component for a high-revving turbocharged engine where minimizing unsprung weight is a priority, this bulkier unit may be overkill. But for the average Subaru owner dealing with mud, snow, and gravel, this robust, all-in-one kit provides peace of mind and a secure seal right out of the box.
• Best for Off-Roading Durability → Subaru Engine Oil Filter, due to its heavier build and explicit mention of removing microscopic pollutants found in dusty environments.
• Best for Precision Fitment → Audi Genuine B9, as it is manufactured specifically for the tight tolerances of the B9 3.0T engine block.
• Best Value for Convenience → Subaru Engine Oil Filter, because it includes the essential crush washer, saving you a trip to the parts counter.
• Best for Compatibility Range → Subaru Engine Oil Filter, covering a massive span of models from 2011 to 2026 across six different vehicle lines.
• Best for Minimalist Inventory → Audi Genuine B9, if you already stock your own crush washers and want just the core filtration element.
• Best for Dusty Conditions → Subaru Engine Oil Filter, designed with a focus on removing millions of microscopic particles typical of off-road use.
• Best for High-Performance Tuning → Audi Genuine B9, tailored to the specific flow characteristics of the B9 chassis.
After analyzing the specs and intended use cases, I would buy the Subaru Engine Oil Filter if my primary goal involves driving off-road or navigating unpredictable terrain. The inclusion of the crush washer is a significant practical advantage that ensures a leak-free seal without second-guessing the hardware. More importantly, the heavier construction and explicit focus on removing microscopic pollutants make it the superior choice for the rigors of off-roading, where engines face higher contamination risks. While the Audi filter is a marvel of lightweight engineering, the Subaru unit offers the robustness and completeness needed for a vehicle that sees more dirt than pavement. For the ultimate off-road setup, this is the safer, more reliable bet.
The Subaru Engine Oil Filter includes a genuine crush washer (803916010) in the package, whereas the Audi Genuine B9 is sold as the filter element only and requires a separate washer purchase.
The Subaru Engine Oil Filter is designed to remove millions of microscopic pollutants and dust particles, making it the stronger candidate for environments with high particulate matter.
No, these are distinct products with different part numbers and dimensions. The Subaru unit fits a wide range of Subaru models, while the Audi Genuine B9 is engineered exclusively for the B9 S4, S5, and SQ5 3.0T engines.
For the Subaru, the recommendation is to change the engine oil and filter every 6 months or every 7,500 miles depending on your driving conditions, though you should always check your specific owner's manual for the schedule that applies to your vehicle.
