If you want immersive, high-fidelity cinematic audio with head tracking for a stationary gaming or movie setup, choose Audeze Mobius; if you need adaptive noise cancellation, lightweight comfort for long Xbox sessions, and seamless console integration, choose Bang & Olufsen Beoplay.
• Audeze Mobius: Delivers planar magnetic sound quality and 3D head tracking but lacks active noise cancellation and is too heavy for outdoor movement. Best for audiophiles who prioritize pure sound fidelity over portability.
• Bang & Olufsen Beoplay: Offers active noise cancellation, Dolby Atmos, and a featherlight design for hours of wear, though it uses standard dynamic drivers rather than the rare planar technology found in its rival. Best for gamers seeking all-day comfort and distraction-free focus.
The Audeze Mobius is engineered for those who demand a cinema-quality experience from their headphones. At its core lies a pair of planar magnetic drivers, a technology often reserved for high-end studio monitors and expensive floor-standing speakers. When you plug these into your PC or connect via Bluetooth, you aren't just hearing game sounds; you are experiencing a level of detail that reveals subtle environmental cues you might miss with standard dynamic drivers. The inclusion of Waves Nx technology brings real-time 3D audio processing to the table, creating a soundscape that feels less like a stereo mix and more like a physical space around you.
What truly sets this headset apart is the head-tracking capability. As you turn your head, the audio image stays locked to your screen or virtual environment, mimicking how we hear in the real world. This isn't just a gimmick; it changes how you perceive directionality in games like battle royales or shooters. You can pinpoint the exact location of an enemy footstep behind you or the rumble of a vehicle approaching from a specific angle. The ability to calibrate the sound to your own anatomy further refines this experience, ensuring the spatial audio fits your ears perfectly. If you spend your time binge-watching movies or immersing yourself in narrative-driven games on a couch or desk, the Mobius transforms your living room into a personal theater.

However, this pursuit of perfection comes with significant trade-offs regarding mobility. Weighing in at 1.1 kg, this is a substantial piece of hardware compared to most consumer headphones. The polycarbonate enclosure is durable, but the overall mass makes it unsuitable for any activity involving running or jogging. There is no water resistance rating provided in the specifications, meaning sweat or rain would be a genuine risk. Furthermore, while it supports various surround modes, it does not feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). If you are in a noisy environment—a busy coffee shop or a loud household—you will hear every background disturbance. It is designed for controlled environments where you want total immersion without external interference, not for life on the go.
The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal targets a different user entirely: the gamer who values comfort and isolation above raw driver technology. Designed specifically for the Xbox ecosystem, it bridges the gap between high-fidelity music listening and competitive gaming. The standout feature here is the Active Noise Cancellation. By using beamforming microphones and advanced algorithms, the headset actively eliminates unwanted background noise, allowing you to focus entirely on the game even when the rest of the house is chaotic. This creates a private bubble of audio that standard open-back or passive headphones simply cannot match.
Comfort is another pillar of this design. Weighing only 282 grams, it is incredibly light, thanks to a unique padded headband that distributes pressure evenly across the top of your skull. The earcups utilize memory foam with jaw support, which is crucial for marathon gaming sessions where fatigue can set in quickly. Unlike the heavier Audeze, the Beoplay is built to be worn for hours without causing neck strain or ear fatigue. The connectivity options are equally robust, featuring a lossless 2.4GHz wireless connection for Xbox consoles that offers zero latency, alongside Bluetooth 5.1 for mobile devices. The virtual boom-arm created by four separate mics ensures your voice comes through clearly during team chats, blending Own Voice technology to prevent your microphone from picking up your own speech as echo.
Despite its strengths, the Beoplay Portal has limitations for the ultra-purist. It utilizes 40-millimeter dynamic drivers rather than the planar magnetic units found in the Audeze. While Bang & Olufsen tunes these drivers to produce impressive, spacious sound with Dolby Atmos support, they do not offer the same extreme resolution and speed of transient response that planar drivers provide. Additionally, while it features quick-touch controls and an app for customization, it lacks the head-tracking mechanics that define the Mobius experience. It is also not marketed as waterproof or suitable for athletic use, so while it is lighter, it is still primarily a stationary or walking-around device, not a dedicated sports headphone.
• Best for audio fidelity and detail → Audeze Mobius, thanks to its rare planar magnetic drivers.
• Best for blocking out distractions → Bang & Olufsen Beoplay, due to its effective Active Noise Cancellation.
• Best for long gaming marathons → Bang & Olufsen Beoplay, given its 282g weight and memory foam comfort.
• Best for spatial awareness and immersion → Audeze Mobius, utilizing real-time head tracking.
• Best for Xbox integration → Bang & Olufsen Beoplay, offering a lossless 2.4GHz wireless link.
• Best for home theater and movies → Audeze Mobius, with its cinematic room emulation and analog inputs.
• Best for battery independence → Bang & Olufsen Beoplay, providing up to 12 hours of wireless playtime.
• Best for durability and build materials → Tie, both use premium metals and plastics, though Mobius is heavier.
• Best for low-latency true wireless earbuds for jogging is actually neither of these products, as both are over-ear headsets not rated for IPX7 waterproofing or intense physical activity.
• Best for best open ear earbuds for jogging is also not applicable here, as both designs are closed-back over-ear models.
I would buy the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay for my daily gaming routine. While the Audeze Mobius is technically superior in terms of raw audio resolution and head-tracking innovation, the sheer weight of 1.1 kg makes it impractical for extended use. The Bang & Olufsen's combination of Active Noise Cancellation, Dolby Atmos support, and featherlight design makes it the far more versatile tool for modern gaming. It allows me to disconnect from the noise of the outside world and focus on the game for hours without discomfort. However, if your primary goal is watching movies on a dedicated home theater setup and you don't mind carrying a heavier load, the Audeze remains a unique choice for its unparalleled sonic depth. Neither of these headphones is suitable for jogging; if you need a best ipx7 waterproof gaming headset for jogging, you will need to look elsewhere for a true sport-specific model.
No, neither the Audeze Mobius nor the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal carries an IPX7 waterproof rating. They are over-ear headsets designed for indoor use and are not suitable for jogging or exposure to heavy sweat and rain.
The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal provides approximately 12 hours of battery life on a single charge, whereas the Audeze Mobius is primarily a wired solution with Bluetooth capabilities that rely on internal power but lack the specific long-life wireless optimization highlighted for the B&O.
Yes, the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal is explicitly engineered for Xbox Series X|S and One, featuring a lossless 2.4GHz wireless connection. The Audeze Mobius can connect to consoles via USB-C or analog cables, but it requires manual configuration for optimal performance.
If you prioritize absolute audio clarity and the ability to hear minute details in movies and games, the planar magnetic drivers in the Audeze Mobius offer a distinct advantage over the dynamic drivers in the Beoplay. However, this comes at the cost of significantly higher weight and size.
