If you want professional-grade studio accuracy for critical listening and mixing, choose Audeze MM-100; if you need a secure, waterproof wearable for swimming and outdoor sports where situational awareness matters, choose NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. These two devices occupy completely different worlds of audio technology, serving users with opposing priorities rather than competing for the same use case. One is a heavy-duty tool for the sound engineer or audiophile who demands truth in every frequency, while the other is a rugged companion for the active athlete who refuses to sacrifice safety for music.
When I first saw these specifications side-by-side, the contrast was jarring. It feels almost unfair to compare them directly because they solve entirely different problems. However, for parents searching for best gaming headphones for children who might be tempted by the wrong category, or for anyone trying to decide between immersive isolation and open-air freedom, this comparison is vital. The decision isn't about which sounds "better" in a vacuum; it is about which device fits the physical environment and the specific task at hand. If your goal is to create content, analyze soundscapes, or enjoy high-fidelity playback in a quiet room, the path is clear. But if you are looking for best in ear earbuds for children that won't fall out during a rough game, or best noise cancelling headband headphones for children that actually allow them to hear traffic while running, the logic shifts entirely. You must stop thinking about sound quality alone and start thinking about durability, connection method, and how the device interacts with the world around the user.
• Audeze MM-100: Delivers pinpoint precision and ultra-low distortion via planar magnetic drivers designed for production-grade accuracy, but requires a wired connection and offers zero ambient noise blocking.
• NANK Bone Conduction Headphones: Provides an open-ear design for safety during sports with IP68 waterproofing and 16GB internal storage, yet sacrifices deep bass and isolation for bone-conduction technology.
• Who should buy the Audeze: Audio professionals, home studio owners, and listeners seeking reference-quality sound in a stationary setting.
• Who should buy the NANK: Runners, swimmers, cyclists, and fitness enthusiasts who need to stay aware of their surroundings while working out.
The Audeze MM-100 is built for the person who treats audio as a craft rather than just background noise. Its core identity revolves around the planar magnetic driver technology, which is engineered to deliver sound with pinpoint precision and ultra-low distortion. This isn't casual listening gear; it is a tool designed to let you hear deeper into every mix without letting a single detail go unnoticed. The drivers are tuned for production-grade accuracy, meaning what you hear is exactly what the artist intended, stripped of coloration or artificial enhancement. This level of fidelity is achieved through patented waveguides, magnet arrays, and diaphragms that raise the bar on sound quality in its class.

Durability is another pillar of this headphone's design, specifically crafted to withstand the rigors of life in a professional setting. The chassis combines magnesium aluminum and steel, creating a frame that is both lightweight and incredibly robust. The suspension strap is adjustable and feather-light, ensuring that even during long sessions, the weight does not become a burden. The earpads feature gel-filled leather that cradles the ears comfortably, making it feasible to wear these for hours of intense focus. When you aren't working, the unit folds flat for travel, protected by a soft cover gig bag included in the package. Every pair is hand-assembled and tested in a Southern California workshop, ensuring that the fit and sound are consistent and reliable.
However, this headphone is not for everyone. It is strictly wired, utilizing a 3.5mm jack with a 6.35mm adapter for laptops and smaller equipment. The cable design is unique, allowing you to connect to either the left or right earcup to keep the cord out of your way when working around instruments or consoles. This lack of wireless connectivity means you cannot take it anywhere without a source device nearby. Furthermore, being an open-back design, it offers no noise cancellation whatsoever. Sound leaks out, and external noise leaks in. If you are in a noisy coffee shop or a busy office, the MM-100 will struggle to isolate you from the chaos. It is also explicitly designed for adults, given the age range description and the complexity of the audio engineering involved. If you are looking for something durable enough for a child to drag across a playground, this is the wrong choice.
In stark contrast, the NANK Bone Conduction Headphones are engineered for movement and safety. The primary design philosophy here is keeping the ear canal open. By bypassing the eardrum and transmitting sound directly through the cheekbones, these headphones allow you to monitor ambient sound while listening to music. This makes them an ideal partner for runners, cyclists, and fitness enthusiasts who need to hear cars, bikes, or other people approaching them. The open-ear bone conduction mode is kinder to the ear canal, reducing fatigue and preventing the buildup of pressure that traditional in-ear monitors can cause during extended wear.
The durability and versatility of the NANK Runner4 are unmatched in the context of extreme environments. It carries an IP68 waterproof rating, achieved through nano-waterproof coating technology and ultrasonic welding design. This means it can effectively prevent sweat and rain from penetrating the internal components, making it suitable for heavy workouts or even full submersion. The device features a premium titanium frame and a skin-friendly silicone back bridge, ensuring a secure fit that stays in place even during vigorous activity. Uniquely, it includes 16GB of built-in MP3 memory, capable of storing up to 2000 songs. This allows users to leave their phones behind and swim underwater, as Bluetooth signals cannot transmit through water, but the MP3 mode works perfectly.
While the NANK excels in the gym and pool, it has trade-offs regarding sound depth. The bone conduction technology naturally lacks the deep bass response of dynamic drivers found in over-ear headphones. The audio driver type is optimized for clarity and speech intelligibility rather than cinematic low-end rumble. Additionally, the battery life is capped at 8 hours of playtime on a 1.6-hour charge, which is sufficient for a day of training but less flexible than a wired setup with infinite power. The control method involves buttons and touch controls, with a specific process to switch between English and Chinese modes. It supports Bluetooth 5.4 for stable connections and lower latency when paired with modern devices, offering a range of 32 feet. Like the Audeze, this product is listed for adult age ranges, though its safety features make it a strong contender for older children engaging in organized sports.
• Best for critical listening and mixing → Audeze MM-100. The planar magnetic drivers and open-back design provide the transparency required for professional audio work.
• Best for swimming and underwater use → NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. Only the NANK supports underwater operation via its internal MP3 storage and IP68 waterproofing.
• Best for situational awareness and safety → NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. The open-ear design ensures you never miss the sound of traffic or warning sirens while moving.
• Best for wired reliability and zero latency → Audeze MM-100. The direct connection eliminates any potential wireless interference or charging anxiety.
• Best for long-term comfort during stationary work → Audeze MM-100. The gel-filled leather pads and suspension strap are designed for hours of sedentary focus.
• Best for high-intensity cardio and sweating → NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. The titanium frame and sweat-proof coating are built to survive the harshest workout conditions.
• Best for portability without a phone → NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. The 16GB internal storage lets you run free of cables or devices.
• Best for detailed soundstage imaging → Audeze MM-100. The wide frequency response and driver technology create a precise stereo image that open-ear designs simply cannot match.
I would choose the Audeze MM-100 if my priority was pure audio fidelity and I had a dedicated space to use them. The engineering behind the planar magnetic drivers and the collaboration with Grammy-winning engineers suggest a product that delivers a level of detail you cannot get anywhere else. However, if I were looking for best gaming headphones for children or any solution for a young person who needs to be active, I would immediately pivot to the NANK Bone Conduction Headphones. The safety aspect of the open-ear design and the ability to swim make it a far more practical and responsible choice for younger users. In my opinion, the Audeze is a masterpiece of engineering for the studio, but the NANK is a lifesaver for the active lifestyle. They serve such different masters that picking one depends entirely on whether you are sitting still to listen or moving fast to survive.
Both products list an age range of "Adult," so neither is officially marketed for children. However, the NANK's open-ear design and durability might be safer for older kids doing sports, whereas the Audeze is too delicate and isolated for typical child use.
No. The Audeze MM-100 is a wired, open-back headphone with no waterproof rating. It is not designed for moisture exposure and will likely be damaged by water or sweat.
The NANK Bone Conduction Headphones feature 16GB of internal memory, which is sufficient to store approximately 2000 songs, allowing you to listen without a connected phone.
While the Audeze MM-100 has high efficiency and works with a wide variety of equipment, its planar magnetic drivers may benefit from a dedicated amplifier to fully realize their performance potential, unlike the wireless NANK which runs on internal battery power.
